Miss Illinois Whitney Thorpe-Klinsky Hula Hoops

Whitney Thorpe-Klinsky Hula HoopsMiss Illinois 2010 stood in front of an audience of kindergartners through fifth graders at a Lena-Winslow Elementary School assembly. On stage behind her were four hula hoops. After talking about sharing, following rules and not giving up, she called four students to the stage for a hula hoop contest. The winner, fifth-grader Lauren Guy went on to compete against Miss Illinois herself, Whitney Thorpe-Klinsky. Students cheered as the second-hand ticked by on the clock. After nearly a minute had passed Thorpe-Klinsky’s yellow hula hoop lost momentum. Guy held up her purple hula hoop to the applause of her peers. The assembly was the start of a week focused on character education. Thorpe-Klinsky has traveled around the state to present the Character Counts! program, one of the platforms of the Miss Illinois Scholarship Association. Throughout the assembly, Thorpe-Klinsky shared personal stories and how they tied into six character traits — trustworthiness, respect, caring, fairness, responsibility and citizenship. She also gave students ideas and ways to practice the six character traits. Full story with video: Journal Standard
