Hula Hooping Through Your Pregnancy

pregnancy7 by Lilea Duran

I started my first pregnancy as so many new moms do, nervous, reading baby books and taking prenatal yoga classes, but I wanted something more! I wanted to move! Dance! Feel like myself again! Though I first picked up a hula hoop when I was 23-years-old, it wasn’t until my first pregnancy two full years later that my hooping journey really began. After talking with my midwife and doctor about it, I started hooping and found a whole new way of exercising through pregnancy, connecting with my growing baby, and staying in touch with myself through my life’s biggest change Ever. Fast forward four years later and hooping has not only helped me now through two pregnancies, but I know keeping hooping in my life has helped me be the best parent I can be to my two children.

When it comes to hooping through pregnancy, I’ve discovered over the years that there are some misconceptions out there that really need to be addressed. That’s why I got in touch with several inspiring hooping mamas in our community and asked them to share their journey and advice on hooping through pregnancy. Here is what they had to say:

How to Butt Hoop with Jannae Palovich

Jannae PalovichJannae Palovich, of Rage Hoops, is here to teach us how to hoop on our butt. The cute trick should be super fun to learn and since she’s seen a lot of interest in learning this one, she decided to try and break it down for all of us. She says, “Give yourself a nice chair sit (position), push your butt out, and the hoop should be big enought to give a good loop, but small enough not to hit the ground while spinning and bouncing.” Let’s give it a try! Jannae is from Portland, Oregon, USA.

Jannae Palovich: Airport Hooping in Vegas

Jannae Palovich Are you going to be doing some holiday traveling? Jannae Palovich of Rage Hoops took a little hoop break between flights in the airport terminal. She was returning home from a trip to Las Vegas where she spent Thanksgiving with her family. Jannae, who has a fear of flying, says “hooping in the airport while watching the sun come up was absolutely the best cure of the preflight jitterbugs.” She lives in Portland, Oregon, USA, and the chill track she is hooping to is “My Friends Never Die” by Odesza and you can download a copy of it for your very own for free on Soundcloud.

Jannae Palovich: Immersive Hoop Dance

Jannae Palovich Hooping videos have a knack for creating a domino effect. One hooper’s video will inspire another hooper to get out there and make one of their own. Jannae Palovich of Rage Hoops, inspired by a recent hooping video, gives in to both the music and the moment and gives us a mesmerizing performance and one very sweet tribute. She says “I was going to jam out to this the other day but got tied up and couldn’t make a video – then my fabulous hoop friend far far away posted a sick ass video of his dance…I wanted to feel like we were dancing together in spirit!” Jannae lives in Portland, Oregon, USA, and her song of choice is the same as her inspiration – “Delamure” by Bassnectar from his new mixtape which you can download here.

Jannae Palovich: A Bug’s Life

Jannae Palovich Most things in life comes down to one’s perspective, how something that we often see, do or think in our day to day life can take on a whole new life just by changing the angle we look at it. Jannae Palovich of Rage Hoops asks us “Have you ever seen a hooper from a bugs perspective?! Its pretty freakin cool if you ask me!” Something we can most certainly agree with as her beautiful spring day hooping takes on a whole new view when imagined through the eyes of something so tiny. Jannae lives in Portland, Oregon, USA, and her soundtrack for this is “Life” by Clark Kent and Mimi Page which you can find on Soundcloud.
