Great isn’t the only word, especially when you have Olivia Newton-John center circle. Hooping is the word as well and the English-born Australian singer, songwriter, and actress with four Grammy awards and five No. 1 singles to her credit, is spinning up something fun and festive this weekend for a good cause down under. For those who may not know her, with more than ten Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 singles and two No. 1 Billboard solo albums, Olivia has captured the hearts and minds of people around the world, even doing so in a variety of genres from pop to country, even new age. Having sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide and perhaps best known for co-starring role with John Travolta in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Grease, the legendary pop idol is also a cancer survivor. Having survived breast cancer in 1992, she has been an advocate for health awareness becoming involved with various charities, health products and fundraising efforts.
Tomorrow night in Melbourne, Australia, Olivia is celebrating the grand opening of her new Cancer and Wellness Center and to celebrate and get the community involved she and her team organized a Wellness Walk through the streets of the city. An incredible team at Perfect Events helped organize the festivities and reeled in Deanne Love of Hoop Lovers. She told Hooping.org, “They wanted me to share hoops with the walkers as they came in for a water break and playful pit stop. I was set up with 50 hoops and fun music ready to entertain and play with as many hoop stars as I could.” Little did she know, one of those hoop stars would turn out to be Olivia herself.
Of the 1500 walkers who stopped in for a spin and a laugh, most of them recounting childhood memories inside the hoop and sharing their hoop joy with Deanne, after most of the walkers went through a smaller group entered the area and it was none other than Olivia Newton-John and her team. Deanne explained, “Olivia walked straight up to me and the hoops, picked one up and instantly gave it a spin like a total hoop star. With absolute grace and poise she chatted to me and the rest of her team while hooping around the area. We joked that her outfit and hoop matched perfectly as if she had planned it.” Olivia continued to hoop as well, encouraging her team to all get their hoops spinning too, and they did. “We giggled at the ‘moopers’ in her crew,” a term coined for male hoopers, as “they were having a blast.”
But wait, there’s more. “Later on Olivia even tried partner hooping inside the hoops with her man. She told me that she used to be able to hoop very well as a child, even neck hooping. It seemed like she hadn’t lost any of her hoop skills either. She’s still got it!” After lots of hooping, plenty of laughter and many photos were taken, Olivia graciously thanked Deanne and the other hoopers in the area before moving on to complete the Wellness Walk. How was it for a hoop star like Deanne to hoop with a superstar of her caliber? She told Hooping.org, “It was such a lovely experience to hoop with my childhood idol. She was very warm, friendly and playful; best of all a total natural inside the hoop.”
Quite the advocate for health and wellness, we won’t be at all surprised if we get to see Olivia hooping it up more in the future. Tomorrow night, however, she’ll be spinning things up for the new Cancer and Wellness Center and the event is sold out. Presented by Olivia with The Board of Austin Health, Olivia and celebrity friends will be bringing Grease back to life. The spectacular show held at the Regent Plaza Ballroom will be hosted by Deborah Hutton and David Campbell with live performances by Olivia Newton-John, Kate Ceberano, Anthony Callea, Rob Mills, Tim Campbell, James Reyne, Kate DeAraugo, Brian Mannix, Chantelle Delaney, Melinda Schneider, Tottie Goldsmith & The Chantoozies and Paulini Curuenavuli.

Deanne Love of HoopLovers is here with a tutorial for those of you just starting out with twin hoops. It’s very common for hoopers who are new to twins to wonder what they can do with their hoops before they have perfected a lot of fancy double hoop tricks. Deanne wants to show you that by keeping it simple, you can incorporate some of the off body moves you already know how to do with your single hoop into double hooping. It still might take a little bit of that “patting your head while rubbing your belly” concentration at first, but this is a great introduction to twin hooping that will get your mind and body used to working with two hoops at the same time. Deanne lives in Melboune, Victoria, Australia.
Deanne Love of Hooplovers is here to teach us her chest hooping version of breaks and reversals, two related techniques that were introduced to the modern hooping world by Jonathan Baxter of the Hoop Path. A common question is what the difference is between breaks and reversals? Both involve stopping the hoop’s rotation and changing the direction of the hoop. A break is when the hoop’s direction is changed and the hoop does less than one full rotation around the body. A reverse or reversal is when the hoop’s direction is changed and the hoop rotates all the way around the body at least 360 degrees. Deanne has lots of tips to help you improve your chest hooping breaks and reversals with two hands, as well as with just one hand. She lives in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Deanne Love, 35, had been teaching school children in Tokyo, Japan, for approximately 10 years before coming across a YouTube video of a woman hula hooping. That moment changed her life and her path. She told The City Weekly that the hooper in the video “was just rocking out in a little bikini in her living room and I was like ‘Wow, that’s amazing’.” From that point on Love began learning not only hooping, but everything from dance techniques to yoga. She quit her day job and set up Hoop Lovers. A year ago, she and her partner Masao moved back to Melbourne, Australia, instituting her Hoop Lovers business there. Now she runs children’s classes, heads into schools, teaches adults and hosts corporate gigs. “I want people to experience what I did,” she said. “It was life-changing. I went from a conservative lifestyle to realizing I could create anything I wanted.” Half the joy in her job is helping others release their inhibitions. “Some people think I’m a kids’ entertainer, but I predominantly teach adults looking for that connection to childhood.”
