Hoopiversary

February 2006. Don’t remember the exact date.

Your First Time

I could keep it going on my waist right away, to my astonishment. It was a heavy hoop — 42″ diameter, 3/4″ tubing 160 psi! I went to trying off-body stuff immediately.

How Often Do You Hoop?

A Few Times a Week

Groups & Troupes

the portal group. Not really our name, but it’s the group I did a show called “portal” with. We’re remounting a piece for the 2011 Flow Show.

Favorite Hooping Location

Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Second Favorite would be the Margaret Jenkins Dance Lab, a dance studio in SF.

Fire?

I have fire hooped; don’t like it. I spin fire poi and fire clubs though. But unlike those other toys, the fire version of a hoop is a different shape. You can’t roll it! And rolls are my favorite.

A Favorite Hooping Memory

Hooping to the band Kan’nal at one of their last performances. I had a spot to myself in a grove of oak trees. It was at Lightning in a Bottle, 2008. It was magical.

Hooping Tunes

Predictably I love electronic-based music, but on the more chill world-beaty side. Shpongle, David Parsons. Also love hooing to classic rock: the Stones and Zeppelin in particular. Also love hooping to Radiohead. Also love hooping to pop: Madonna, Britney, Justin Timberlake. Also love hooping with no music at all.

Non-Hooping Music

The same kinds of music! Exactly the same.
