The Hooping Life While Hooping.org is having some contests and giving away prizes to celebrate the relaunch of the website, we wanted to do something special this week too. The result is a contest sponsored by World Hoop Day and Hooping.org that we are very excited about. How would you like to bring the hooping popumentary film to your town on World Hoop Day: October 10, 2010 for the first community initiated screening of the film? Here’s what you need to know. While the film can’t be shown without the $500 licensing fee, we’ve agreed to donate the licensing fee once it is raised and any surplus proceeds brought in to World Hoop Day to help promote peace and get hoops to needy kids. So consider that you would need a minimum of 50 people at $10 a head to cover the cost of the licensing, and when you’re coming up with your plan be sure to have that in mind. Put your thinking cap on, drive around town, call a few friends and figure out what your plan would be to make a screening of The Hooping Life happen on World Hoop Day where you live. Be creative. Think outside the box. Come up with cool ideas. And once you’ve got yours figured out, post it here. While only one place can win this contest too, we want you to know that everything posted here will be seriously considered when future screenings are mapped out. We’re really looking forward to seeing what you come up with and you have until Midnight PST on Tuesday, July 20th. Good Luck!

I hope everyone has been thinking about this! It’s a really great opportunity to see a beautiful documentary *and* bring your greater community together. :) I’m working hard with my friends to bring a lovely WHD celebration to Nashville, regardless if we are chosen.

Looking forward to reading everyone’s wonderful celebration ideas next week!

World Hoop Day Vancouver BC!!! Come and join the fun

We have a confirmed venue at a local community centre, on Oct 10/10. Local hoop fascilitators and others have been promoting world hoop day http://www.doaworldofgood.org – we have the venue from 2-5, there will be vendors, other peformers such as drum circles, DJs, first nations hoop dancers and more. We will have work shops in break out rooms. We’ve been in the local newspaper and will be on radio/tv as the event gets closer. It falls on the long weekend before Canadian Thanksgiving and the proceeds which will be $2.00 minimum donation will go back to http://www.worldhoopday.com, to provide more hoops all over the world.

We are also promoting an evening event, which will be more adult friendly, where if we are chosen we would feature The Hooping Life movie. The evening event is for hooping, dancing and celebrating as we’ve worked very hard as a community to create this event and contribute and give back. We are very excited. Please pick us! you won’t be dissappointed. We will be pre-selling tickets for the evening event.

I’m confused?! Are we supposed to raise $500 and then post that we did it on here? Make a list of people willing to contribute that adds up to $500? Plan an event without the movie and you may be able to play it? I tried to contact The Hooping Life about bringing the movie to Tucson’s alternative movie venue ‘The Loft.’ But i couldnt get a response from anyone affiliated….The venue said the movie was perfect for them if I could get it here…..We have a large hooping community between here and Phoenix so raising $500 would be no prob! I organize the Tucson Hoop Group and we also have a performance troupe Orbital Evolution which would promote and sell tickets….We also perform with the fire troupe Elemental Artistry so if it’s about what kind of massive show/fest you can put on we could go pretty big….Do we need to organize something at the theater in advance? I’m just not sure of how to ask for donations to something that may not happen….We definitely have the capability to take on putting on something pretty big :)

The DC Hoop Collective (DCHC – http://www.dchoopcollective.com/) would love to host the first community sponsored premier of The Hooping Life. Our vision for World Hoop Day is actually a full weekend of participatory events to include the following:

Saturday, October 9, 2010 ~ The Hooping Life Premier and Flow Performance showcasing local hoopers at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier, MD (a diverse arts district just across the DC line & metro accessible) * We have the theatre space and projector screen reserved for these spectacular events. http://WorldArtsFocus.org

Sunday, October 10, 2010 ~ World Hoop Day festivities at Rock Creek Park (also metro accessible) in Washington, DC * A permit has been secured for this stunning national park to host our all-day hoop-party. http://www.nps.gov/rocr

The ever-expanding DC Hoop Collective includes Hoopers from all around the “DMV” (DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia). We boast well over 1,500 members in our combined contact lists and consistently advocate for DC & federal government participation in our events and missions. Over the last several years, we have received recognition and media attention from CNN, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, Fox 5, and Voice of America, as well as other local & national media outlets, and know that we can successfully market and generate an incredible turnout to the aforementioned events. We of the DCHC and flourishing local hoop community are financially committed to guarantee the $500 licensing fee.

Last year our community held an amazing hoop jam at the Washington Monument on 9.9.09, and subsequently rallied together to share the joy of hoopdance with local foster care youth by donating hand-made hoops & lessons through the national non-profit KidSave. This year, we intend to double last year’s efforts plus donate the surplus funds generated from the film premier to World Hoop Day’s mission.

Thank you for considering our nation’s capital as the location for the first community sponsored premier of The Hooping Life. We are super excited about hosting this monumental event! :)

World Hoop Day 10/10/10 is going to be a major celebration for Nashville; not only because the event is planned by several Middle Tennessee hoopers (some of us are in different cities) as a labor of love but also because the Nashville circus community has been invited to participate! We love the jugglers, belly dancers, aerialists, unicyclists and fire breathers in our community and they invite us to their shows, to perform with them and to play in the park, so we thought they should join us in spreading the hoop & circus arts love to the greater Nashville area.

Our gathering will be at Dragon Park in Nashville, the site of Sunday juggling & hoop jams and home to the beautiful glass mosaic-tiled dragons that give the park its name (click here for photos –> http://tinyurl.com/dragon-park ) and will start at 1 p.m., although people are welcome to come early and play with the hoops and circus/flow toys available. Entrance to the event will be a donation of $5 and will include the chance to win fabulous prizes donated by local companies, such as photographic art prints by Aziza, acupuncture from East Nashville Community Acupuncture and private lessons in hooping and other circus arts. Other prizes, such as jewelry, photography sessions and hoops can be won via a silent auction and more hoops will be available for purchase as well with 10% of the hoop sale profits going to the WHD foundation. All donations and money from the silent auction goes straight to the WHD foundation.

WHD: Nashville event will also include the following for our attendees entertainment & participation:
–Mini-workshops in some of the circus arts available in our area (hoop, juggling, poi, etc.)
–”Sideshow” performances & live music. RhythMystik (drum group) and Justin Kalk Orchestra have been invited, and local singer/songwriter Vanessa Barbee will perform as well. More will be added later. The sideshow performances are a chance to let our talented community entertain, whether it is a slam poetry reading, belly dancing, juggling or, of course, hooping, while also showcasing the different circus arts one can join.
–Booths with face painting, henna tattoos, 3D pumpkin carving and a photo booth
–Play area to come and play with the flow toys.
–Some food will be available. We are looking to have local restaurants participate and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to make an appearance :)
–Carnival style games to add to the fun atmosphere, such as sack races, bean bag toss & a hoop relay.

The event will continue until 5 p.m., at which we will break for the “Hooping Life” community premiere. Nashville’s lovely Belcourt Theater is located one block from the park and is a fabulous place to screen “The Hooping Life” in one of its two movie theaters or even on a projector in the 300-seat stage area. Afterwards, a jam will be held for any and all who want to attend and glow objects are encouraged :)

Nashville has a strong hooping community (70 of us hooped the Half-Marathon!) and combined with our circus arts friends, we will draw in, laugh, play & entertain Nashville at Dragon Park and Belcourt Theater. Thanks for considering Nashville for the community premiere!
