Mystical Hoopers Groove? (4 posts)

So the more I struggle to master the art of hula hooping the more I have noticed one thing I think I lack but REALLY hope to acquire…what I call the “hooper’s groove”. I have been watching many tutorials and hoop dance performance videos and I have come to realize (or notice) that all of the accomplished hula hoopers seem to have the same swagger or body motion about them…the way they beebop around and really move WITH their hoop….

Given I am determined not to give up and that I am determined to master the beautiful and sexy art of hoop dancing, I refuse to believe that this rythem is just born to some and not to others….BUT I can’t help second guessing myself…
Am I just not coordinated enough? Am I missing something? Is there some mystical trick to acquiring this flow? Is it that I am holding back and not letting go of my inhabbitions? Will I just feel it one day? Have I not been practicing hard enough? Am I just imagining this groove? Do I actually already have it and just haven’t seen it in myself?

Any suggestions are welcome from those who already have and feel this body motion I so longingly practice for! (does this make sense?)

Hi Traci – you have the passion for sure and I’m sure the groove will follow. From what I’ve observed it seems the groove comes with a ‘looser’ back – are you keeping your back too straight or stiff? It’s almost as if the hips an back are a little independent of each other – when I’ve watched say, my boyfriend try to master it, he has to work 10x harder because his back and hips are all moving as one big, straight unit. He almost appears to be using his whole body to turn the hoop :-) but just keep it relaxed and loose and try not to focus too hard. One move that may help is putting your right leg forward as you hoop and almost lightly passing your body weight into that leg with each turn – almost like a rocking motion. Hope this isn’t too much of a ramble… hope something I’ve said can help you :-) all the best

Traci, the flow will come! :D And while you may be admiring the sexy, awesome swaggerin’ grooves of advanced hoopers, peoples’ bodies are all different and we hoop in different ways. No two flows are the same. I am sure you have your own beautiful groove already and don’t even know it!

I recommend watching yourself in a mirror and appreciating your own style! Take a good look at the awesomeness that is you! Your flow will improve with time, practice, and heightened comfort with the hoop, but it’ll always be YOUR flow! :D

    Love,
    Ariel (Quanyin)
