And in In Richmond, Virginia, RVA Magazine reports, “This year’s World Hoop Day shared the date with Veterans Day: 11-11-11, and hoopers consider this day particularly auspicious, according to Christopher Ryan of the Sacred Synchronicity. ‘When the gates to the underworld and the portals to heaven are bridged on Earth,’ he said, hoopers everywhere should dance ‘with the intention to heal all aspects of reality.’ But for regular hoopers young and old alike, Friday, November 11 marked a day of love and learning. Kids of all ages came out to the Randolph Community Center to hoop it up.”

World Hoop Day 2013: Let’s Choose a Date

November 17, 2011 in World Hoop Day

World Hoop Day Annie O’Keefe of World Hoop Day writes, “For five years we have celebrated World Hoop Day on very special tri-numeral dates. Starting with 7/7/7 and continuing through next year to 12/12/12, and the magic of numbers has spun a portal to another world. A real world, made possible by every one of you. Since the beginning, however, people have come up and asked me what about 2013? You have also been getting that question and don’t know what to say. Well, it’s time to decide together. For the next week, I am asking you to submit your ideal date choice for 2013 and beyond. Think globally. Spring and Fall are equally pleasant seasons and opposite on either side of the globe. While summer may be a great time to hoop outside, it’s only fabulous in one hemisphere…” Got an idea or an opinion? Share it with World Hoop Day.

Amazing Hoop Race Grand Finale

November 16, 2011 in Entertainment, Europe, Features, Male, The Hooping Life, Videos, World Hoop Day

The time has come everybody and we are racing to the final finish line of The Amazing Hoop Race, Hooping.org’s revolutionary new contest that sent teams of two on a virtual hula hoop race around the world! Before we tell you about the cinematically inspired final leg of the race in Los Angeles, California, USA, here’s what has happened so far for those who are just tuning in.

We started off with meeting our 14 amazing teams who hooped to the starting line from places all over the world. The race was explained and our teams were off to the airport (where they got people hooping) on their way to Porto Alegre, Brazil, where they participated in a Samba Hoop Dance Challenge. The following day three teams were eliminated and the rest were spinning their way to Johannesburg, South Africa. There they hit a Detour, and while some teams were hooping with wild animals on safari, others were cooking up pampoenkoekies before our Kwaito Hoop Bliss Challenge. In Johannesburg three more teams were eliminated and the rest were off to spend Halloween hooping in Paris, France. Once there, on a Roadblock, one member of each team descended beneath the city streets to hoop in the Catacombs – one of the scariest places on earth! Once they returned to the rand of the living, our teams presented Parisian Gothic Hoop Dance Music Videos on Halloween itself. There was, of course, another elimination before sending the remaining six teams on a hooping journey to Tokyo, Japan. Once there our Tokyo Matsuri Flow Challenge was inspired both by Shichi-go-san and the beauty and grace of the cherry blossom itself. In the tightest race elimination ever, three more teams were sent to the sidelines, leaving Team London, Team Seattle and Team Wisconsin hoop racing their way into the finale with a shot at winning The Amazing Hoop Race Grand Finale Prize Package. What exactly is in that prize package? Allow us to tell you all about it. Read the rest of this entry →

WHD 2011 Coverage Continues

Hula Hoop Cake

Tink's WHD Cake

Following yesterday’s extensive coverage of World Hoop Day 2011 around the globe, we now invite you to sit back, relax, have a slice of hoop cake (photo by Tink in Tokyo) and enjoy a little more. In St. Louis, Missouri, the St. Louis Hoop Club got Fox 2′s morning show host Tim Ezell hooping it up. And while we shared with you about two WHD flash mobs in Boston, Massachusetts, and Brighton, England, today both made the local news. The Boston Globe reports, “At noon on Veterans’ Day, amid the long food truck lines and the shuffle of T passengers and office workers on lunch breaks, a flash mob broke out in Dewey Square. But this demonstration wasn’t affiliated with Occupy Boston: This was a mob of hula-hoopers, organized by ‘hooping collective’ Boston Hoop Troop to celebrate World Hoop Day, an international holiday of ‘whirled peace’ created by Annie O’Keeffe and first celebrated in 2007. … The performance seemed to draw the attention it sought: A stopped crowed watched and took photos, and for over half an hour after the flash mob ended, a number of people stopped to ask what the hoopers were doing or to try out the hula-hoops for themselves.” Full story with video: The Boston Globe. And on the other side of The Atlantic “the hooping enthusiasts marked World Hoop Day with an event at The Level in Brighton and Pavilion Gardens in Brighton.” Full story with video: The Argus.

Above: In Austin, Texas, hoopers gathered on the roof of Whole Foods for a special World Hoop Day celebration – and a Go Pro camera came into the picture. While the dreamy video posted above is not recommended for those prone to motion sickness, it features several attendees. Meanwhile, Karin de Wit (pictured right) who rose to fame this year on Holland’s Got Talent may not have been home in Breda, The Netherlands, for WHD this year, but she still took time to share the joy of hooping at Performance Pre school in Placencia, Belize. For those who enjoy pics we have more WHD photos to share with you from Tokyo, Japan, too. In Atlanta, Georgia, hoopers gathered at Piedmont Park to celebrate, while in Cincinatti, Ohio and in Salt Lake City, Utah, hoopers celebrated with the World Hoop Day Dance for 2011.

In Guadalajara, Mexico, hoopers there celebrated with a World Hoop Day dance of their own at the Plaza de Armas. Stay tuned to Hooping.org for more WHD 2011 reporting -and for tomorrow’s grand finale of The Amazing Hoop Race.
