Tony Duncan Talks Hoop Dance With Nelly Furtado

Tony Duncan Talks Hoop Dance With Nelly Furtado

Earlier this month we told you about “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)” – the new single by Nelly Furtado. Nelly was caught on camera on stilts in downtown Los Angeles and World Champion Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan was in the mix so needless to say we were super curious. Well the track has been released digitally now in the U.S. as the lead single from her upcoming fifth studio album “The Spirit Indestructible”. The song certainly has a great groove, but while the lyrics are clear that bigger is better there is little mention of hoops and she appears to be referring to big hoop ear rings. And yet a new behind-the-scenes sneak peak at the making of the music video for the single has Nelly hanging out in Los Angeles with not just Tony Duncan, but his wife Violet Duncan and his brother Kevin Duncan as well. The Yellow Bird Productions hoop dancers talk a little about hoop dance and show off some of their skills as well and we can see they are clearly in the video. So needless to say we’re still intrigued. As for the new album Nelly says, “This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy and the relentlessness of the spirit. I want people to live this music the way we did when we wrote it. I want them to jump, dance, scream, laugh, cry, love and vibe to it, and to turn it up very loud everywhere.” Listen to the new single “Big Hoops (Bigger is Better) with lyrics below and check out the sneak peak at the making of the music video with the Duncans. NPR Gets Hooping with Hoopla!Berlin

Hoopla!Berlin

Hoopla!Berlin

Earlier this week we dropped in on a hoopjam in Berlin hosted by Hoopla!Berlin. Now WNYC, New York’s flagship public radio station, is doing the same. Balazs Ari, a former mountain bike racer from Canada, has made a career out hooping. “It’s something like yoga but faster. It’s one way of saying it. It’s like Pilates without all the equipment. It’s like riding a bike with a smaller circle, if you wanna do it for exercise,” Ari explained. Hoopla!Berlin was established by Ari and his girlfriend, Rachel Catton, six years ago and they teach hoop dance. “Basically, it started with one hoop,” Ari says. “My girlfriend had this hoop at home, and after five minutes, I started sweating. I figured this could be good exercise. I don’t like going to the gym. Then we started to look into it, and we realized, in California, it’s been a trend since the early nineties. Well, it’s a trend. There are so many moves. We started to experiment and to practice, and it took about a year to build up the courage to actually start doing classes.” Britta Poppe is a Hoopla!Berlin regular. Once a week she joins their class at Kater Holzig, a club near Jannowitzbruecke. She says she can tune out all her problems. It’s a bit like meditation but also a great work out. “It’s really good for toning the body because all these lower muscles, the deeper muscles are trained. You have to change your equilibrium every second, so it’s really good for toning the body. Listen to the radio broadcast below.

Grammy-award-winning Canadian music artist Nelly Furtado is rolling in later this month with a brand new single called “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)” and while we initially weren’t entirely sure what it was all about, when Nelly was spotted high atop a pair of stilts in downtown Los Angeles shooting her new music video for it, well needless to say we got very excited. Nelly tweeted “The higher the better!” as she wobbled her way down the sidewalk actually and given the title of the song, the stilts, her outfit, we were thinking the circus had to be in the house, and if that was the case, could the big hoops and hoopers be waiting in the wings? Given the cover art we weren’t entirely sure, it looked more like an earring, and her recently tweeted photo had us thinking otherwise. But then Nelly also tweeted a photo saying she was honored to be working with World Champion Native American Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan and his family – who is collaborating with her on what is destined to be one of the big hooping songs of 2012, no matter how you slice it. The track, produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, is the lead single off her first English language album in six years, and is set to be released later this month. The new album, called T.S.I. which stands for The Spirit Indestructible, will be hitting the stores on June 19th. Lucinda Boutin Makes Her Own Hooping Music

April 6, 2012 in Sounds

Lucinda Boutin

Lucinda Boutin

Lucinda Boutin started hooping last year to lose weight and she’s been hooping it up ever since. In fact she’s lost 35 pounds to date is looking forward to a summer of hooping herself happy. In preparation for that Lucinda has been making plenty of hoops and making some new tunes to hoop to. What is she doing with the more than 50 hoops she has made? She told Hooping.org, “I give them to my friends to spread the love of hooping.” And with her other love these days being making music, it was probably only a matter of time before the hoop inspired Lucinda to create her own musical hooping inspirations. She explained, “There is something very primal about hooping and music is essential, at least for me. I began creating playlists of my favorite music, but found the songs were too short and since I am well versed using Apple Loops and Garage Band, I started composing my own.” Now when she gets together with her hooping sisters around the firepit at night under the stars to hoop, they hoop dance to Lucinda’s very own hoop tracks. One of those tracks is “Revel in the Sound” and you can download it on Soundcloud.
