Hooping Idol 2: Slow Jams Week

May 8, 2012 in Australia / New Zealand, Canada, Children, Community, Europe, Features, LED Hoops, Male, Videos

Hooping Idol Slows Down Welcome to Hooping Idol 2, Hooping.org’s revolutionary contest that is leading us all on an ever spinning journey in our search for the planet’s next big hooper star! For those of you just tuning in we started off by introducing our 20 selected finalists for Season Two. Then we all shook our groove thangs for Hooping Idol Disco Week. We said our Disco Farewells to 4 and announced Circus Week. Our 16 finalists spun up amazing things under the Big Top for Hooping Idol Circus Week, but 6 were eliminated and we introduced our Slow Jams Week concept.

For this challenge our finalists needed to take our Ten Easy Hooping Video Tips with them and slow things down. We asked our finalists to get intimate with us, to connect with the audience, to really bring themselves and their personality for this round. And to help them find that magic place we told them to set their radio dial to the soft rock or slow jams station. After all, soft rock songs and slow jams are all about intimacy, or feeling the lack thereof in life. They’re songs about love and romance, heartache and loneliness. They’re songs about feelings and for our Top Ten finalists to take things to the next level we wanted them to share theirs and channel those emotions into their hooping and their video. After all, we all want to feel something – and in order for us to feel it, they’re going to have to be feeling it first. For Slow Jams week Hooping Idol we are going soft and warm like the quiet storm. It’s time to focus on beauty. It’s a great time to showcase grace and flow. It’s the perfect time to bring it. They all claimed a song under five minutes in length and created a Slow Jams Week video for all of us, remembering to make it count because when the week comes to a close three Hooping Idol finalists will be heading home.

Seated at our judges table today are our four judges with incredible credentials, as well as a special guest. Our four judges are Anah Reichenbach of Hoop Revolution, Rich Porter of Isopop, Canadian hooping legend Babz Robinson of Wild Girl Hoops, and the amazing Marawa The Amazing of MarawaTheAmazing.com in the UK. And joining them this week is none other than Rebecca Phipps who took 3rd place for Hooping Idol Season One. Our finalists are once again presenting their videos and our judges will once again be sharing their thoughts and comments. So without any further ado, get out your snuggie as we proudly present our Top Ten finalists in a randomly selected order for Hooping Idol Slow Jams Week! Read the rest of this entry →

Astroboy Becomes Talentdong Pinoy Ultimate Champion

May 8, 2012 in Asia, Fire, Male, Television, Videos

Astroboy In major hooping news, Astroboy, aka Daniel Darwin, hooped his way to become the 3rd Ultimate Champion in Talentadong Pinoy’s Battle of the Champions Grand Finals in The Philippines. Held at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City, Astroboy has not only become P1-million richer, he scored himself a brand new Chevy car and P10,000 from Champion detergent. Why was he so popular? Darwin, who is half-Pinoy and half-American, told the Philippine Star, “I think it’s a mixture of the artistry inside of the act that you see and also how it feels where it hits you — in your stomach and in your soul. I think it’s the relationship between what the artist gives you and what you feel from the artist.” What he gave the audience was a top notch hooping performance spiced with fire tricks which ultimately had him stealing the spotlight from the more traditional forms of talent on the show, giving him the edge to win the text voting public’s nod of approval.

Of his grand finale performance he said, “I think that from the beginning what appealed to people with what I do is how joyful it makes me feel and also that I’m on fire. I wanted to do something that incorporated a story of fire bringing light to people.” Astroboy was in “absolute disbelief” when he was proclaimed the winner over pole dancer Johnny “Sustantivo” Villanueva, power belter Ivy Grace “Ayegee” Paredes, Kundiman singer Melbelline Caluag, Catarman’s pride Dancing Is Fun, ballroom dancing duo Craig and Samantha Abaya-Campos, sand artist Monica Regalario and Soul Diva Rhyzza Nicol Kafilas. “I was so scared, so nervous and so anxious. I just told myself ‘You gave the best performance. It’s up to God now.’ And I just found peace with whatever the verdict. I didn’t expect it would be me.” He told the Philippine Entertainment Portal, “All eight of us are so incredibly good, up until the very last second I had no idea who’s gonna win and I’m so proud of each and every one of us. I feel like all of us gave one hundred percent yesterday, so hindi ko po alam. I didn’t know until they announced my name.”

Astroboy started hula hooping for birthday parties. “People really like what I do. And so, then I started performing more regularly and I started doing classes. There are so many singing competitions and dancing competitions around. I think that what I brought was something new. I was really happy to be one of the first people to bring hula hooping as an art form to the forefront.” According to Showbiz Nest, in addition to winning the grand prize Astroboy will also now be representing the Philippines in the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood, California on July 6 – 15, 2012. Hooping Idol 2 Welcomes Rich Porter

April 19, 2012 in Features, Male

Rich Porter

Rich Porter

Hooping Idol 2 officially got underway yesterday and we’ve introduced you to one of the judges for this year and now it’s time to introduce you to another. Ladies and gentlemen, please give a great big Hooping Idol welcome to Rich Porter! Our first male judge at the table, Rich is an established innovator in the ever-evolving genre of hoopdance. With a degree in architecture from the acclaimed program at Calpoly, Rich is known for his original approach to plotting the hoop’s path through space, sometimes creating graphic “blueprints” that map the hoop’s trajectory. His dynamic style encompasses crisp, geometrical movements that punctuate and provide contrast to fluid, high-speed motion. Rich’s research and publishing about hoop tubing popularized polypropylene as an alternative to traditional polyethylene hoops. He explained, “I consider hoops like golf clubs. I like jamming with my big hoop. For off body stuff, I find that I can be more precise with my little guys. That’s just my opinion.” The three time Hoopie Award winner – 2010 Male Hooper of the Year, 2010 Photo of the Year, 2011 Instructor of the Year – Rich has performed and taught workshops in countless cities, gatherings and festivals. With his unique perspective and keen attention to detail, Rich’s Hoop Technique DVD collaboration with Spiral delivered what is quite possibly the most beautiful and moving disc on the market. Living in San Francisco, California, USA, Rich is excited to be on board for Hooping Idol 2 this year and we couldn’t be more excited to have him seated at our judge’s table. And who will be joining Marawa and Rich on our panel for Hooping Idol 2? Stay tuned and you’ll know soon enough.
