Jo Thredgold gave a great interview to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), telling them it can be a bit of a squeeze hooping inside her small cabin in the Roxby Downs caravan park, but she insisted it was a fun way to wind down after her work out at the Olympic Dam Mine. Wait a minute, she works in a mine? In fact she does, as an archaeologist. When she isn’t working, however, she’s busy getting others in the outback mining community hooked on hooping. “It’s just a bit of a release at the end of the day, it’s something physical to do and I don’t have to think too much, and it’s very different to what I do during the day.” Jo began hooping three years ago after finding a video online. Jo told ABC that today’s hooping is very different than the hula hooping of her childhood. She uses large heavier hoops constructed from garden hosing and hoops all over her body, not just her waist. Often on a Sunday afternoon, Jo takes her hoop to the local community park where she gets others hooked on hooping. Tracy Warneke, a recent recruit, told ABC that most people in the community are supportive, noting, “People are really interested to know what it’s all about, but I must admit my mother thinks it’s a little bit strange.” Listen to the full interview. Jo and Tracy live in Roxby Downs, South Australia, Australia.

Rowan TwoSisters on the Radio

March 7, 2012 in Interviews

Rowan TwoSisters On 90.1 KPFT Radio For Peace in Houston, Texas, they tuned into the topic of health and hooping with “Fat Hooper Star” Rowan TwoSisters of Punk Rock Hoops this morning. “One thing I think is super fun about hooping is that it reminds us how to play and laugh, cause even kind of sitting here and listening to the Monsanto thing, man that’s a kick, so how do we not internalize that and get smaller and more turned in on ourselves, right? When we go outside and start hooping, turn on some good music, and when you hoop, typically in the beginning, most of us aren’t very good, especially myself, so it takes an awesome sense of humor to keep going. But once you’re in that bright and shiny hula hoop things start being a little bit more fun, the energy gets a little bit higher and you start laughing a little bit more. Somebody’s kid will wander up, try and hoop with you, and all of a sudden you’ve got a little community going and that’s what so fun about hooping… And because I am a fat hula hooper I have some biscuits, I call those the little pudgy spots underneath my arm, check out what I can do with my biscuits! Woohoo! And y’know the more I hoop the more my biscuits go down.” An inspiring awesome interview! Listen in starting at the 7:30 mark.

New Mom Amanda Frealy on Pregnancy and Hooping

Amanda Frealy of Hoop Frealy

Amanda Frealy

For giving birth little more than two weeks ago, Amanda Frealy looks surprisingly svelte when she walks into her interview with The Standard carrying a dozen hoops. Frealy gave birth to PennyLane Marie Henry on January 28th (Congratulations Amanda!). “It’s really cool being a mom. People can’t explain it to you.” Frealy said being pregnant and hooping was a new challenge. “You have to move so differently, especially around the waist, but around the legs, too,” she said. “I think that strengthened me, though, because I was kind of lazy and really tired when I was pregnant. Hooping lifted my spirits… and it kept me in shape, which they say makes labor easier.” Frealy said hooping is kind of like swimming in that it uses every muscle. “Especially when you’re doing hoop dance because you use every body part. Your arms, legs, back, butt – everything. Hooping helps you gain balance and hand-eye coordination, as well.” She’ll begin teaching her second round of hoop classes at Missouri State University soon or score a hoop from her from Hoop Frealy. She lives in Springfield, Missouri, USA.

Kool Kat of the Week: Rebecca DeShon

Rebecca DeShon

Rebecca DeShon

With The Hooping Life screening in Atlanta this Friday, comes Atlanta Retro’s selection of event organizer Rebecca DeShon of Hoop Essence as their “Kool Kat of the Week”. In the interview she talks about the big event and when questioned about the difference between hula hooping and hoop dance, she explains, “Today we see hoopers not just simply flinging dozens of hoops around their waist like you see in the circus, but truly dancing in and with the hula hoop as a dance partner. It is now such an extraordinary companion for artistic self expression. Hoop dance just means that we are actually dancing with our hoops and at times incorporating many different ‘tricks.’ Hooping has expanded so far between styles that we are actually seeing entire ‘genres’ of hoop dance styles. It is an incredible art form! With the proper hand-crafted hoop, patience, practice and determination, I know that anyone can be a hoop dancer. I, for one, have no professional dance training, so I can assure you that you don’t have to be a ‘dancer’ to become a hoop dancer.”
