Hula Hooping at Wimbledon

June 21, 2011 in Entertainment

What do professional tennis players do when it rains? If they’re at Wimbledon they may be lucky enough to find a hula hoop to play with. Novak Djokovic, Andrea Petkovic and Victoria Azarenka scored themselves a yellow hula hoop to help keep them busy during the interminable rain delays. In fact Petkovic captured an impromptu hula hoop contest on video.

West Coast Premiere of Hoop Dazzles Audience

June 20, 2011 in Canada, Entertainment

Dance Camera West 2011 Sign“Hoop” – a short film by Montreal filmmaker Marites Carino featuring Rebecca “Beka Hoop” Halls of iHoopU.com, had it’s West Coast premiere this weekend at Dance Camera West. The 10th Annual Dance Media Film Festival event held in Los Angeles, California, took place this year at The Getty Center, The Hammer Museum and the Fowler Museum featuring numerous dance related films. “Hoop” was screened as part of a Global Screendance series with seven other shorts outdoors at the Fowler Museum on the University of California Los Angeles campus. While you may recall that a video documenting the making of the film was nominated for a 2010 Hoopie Award for Outstanding Video in and of itself, having finally viewed the finished product, it is mesmerizingly breathtaking. The camera work and images leaves the viewer literally floating in space amidst the circular rhythms and patterns of Halls’ always dynamic hoop moves. “Hoop” literally transforms the art of hoop dance to high art and Carino’s vision for this project couldn’t have been executed more beautifully. Ultimately the only problem with it is that it isn’t long enough, not only by my own desire that it could have continued, but by the wild applause from audience itself. “Hoop” was produced by Bravo! FACT and DANCE MOViES Commision EMPAC.

Zooey Deschanel Hula Hoops

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel is one super busy lady. In addition to all of her acting gigs and being busy with her band She & Him and her new website HelloGiggles.com, she also spends a lot of time hooping it up. “I can hula-hoop for hours,” the 500 Days of Summer actress told SELF Magazine, and she demonstrated that fact for their photographer as well. In addition to showing off her hula hoop skills with an unfortunately cheap toy store hoop, Zooey offered tips on how to be the best you that you can be. She advised, “Most people spend too much time comparing themselves to others. Get to know yourself a little bit better. Stop and ask yourself a few questions, and think about you.” As for health and exercise she suggested, “A lot of people work out to be skinny. That’s so boring, and it seems like a depressing goal for a modern woman. I work out to be healthy and because I like it. I do sports or classes, things that engage my mind. If you’re active, fitness will follow; and probably a good figure, too.” Watch the video below:

Ninja Hoop Battle

June 13, 2011 in Entertainment

While going all ninja and hooping have been linked by many in recent years, here we have a vintage battle with Godfrey Ho in his role as Bruce Lambert getting all ninja when suddenly, hoops appear. We aren’t exactly sure which film this is as Ho played Lambert in seven films between 1982 and 1988. Ho is a former Hong Kong-based prolific film director and screenwriter, sometimes considered the Ed Wood of Hong Kong cinema. He is believed to having directed more than one hundred films. Many of his works are now regarded as cult films by aficionados of C and Z movies as being among some of the most unintentionally funny films ever created.

Jedward

Jedward were recently spotted hooping outside the May Fair Hotel in London. For those who don’t know, John Paul Henry Daniel Richard Grimes and Edward Peter Anthony Kevin Patrick Grimes are an Irish pop rap duo and they are identical twins, performing under the name Jedward. Who is the better hooper of the two? It turned out to be John (watch the videos below). Widely known for their hair, the twins first appeared as John & Edward on the sixth season of The X Factor back in 2009, in a phenomenon described as “The Jedward Paradox” where they finished sixth. Jedward’s debut single “Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)” reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the Irish Singles Chart. Their debut album “Planet Jedward” reached number one on the Irish Albums Chart and number 17 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified platinum in Northern Ireland. January Jones Hula Hooped Herself into Shape

January Jones as Emma Frost

January Jones, who plays mutant telepath Emma Frost in the new film X-Men: First Class, in addition to being on the hit television series Mad Men, has spilled the beans about her private life and one of her secrets is she’s a hooper. In fact, while it’s common practice for actors to bring in a team of personal trainers, nutritionists and assistants to help them prepare for a role, Jones revealed that a hula hoop was her only aid in muscling-up for the part. “I had a weighted hula hoop in my hotel room which I loved to use,” she explained, adding, “I would literally watch an entire episode of Friends while hula hooping and it didn’t feel like a work out.” And Jones’ hooping talents apparently provided much amusement on the set. James McAvoy, who plays the young Professor Charles Francis Xavier (Professor X), was very surprised. She said, “I would come to work and brag about my hula hooping skills and he didn’t believe anybody could really hula hoop.” Jones also told the press that she’s pregnant and that she is going to be a single mom, having split from her actor boyfriend Jason Sudeikis earlier this year. She did not say who the dad is. Last week the film’s director, Matthew Vaughn, who is married to supermodel Claudia Schiffer, publicly denied he is the baby’s father.
