New Zealand HoopFest is spinning into Wellington soon and it’s the first hoop gathering in kiwi country. Stuff reports that Karori woman Claire French is planning the inaugural three-day festival in Lower Hutt starting on February 17th. “I’m trying to show a lot of different styles so people who have never hula hooped before can get involved,” she said. “There will be workshops on burlesque hooping, hoop yoga and Native American hooping.” French became interested in hooping about five years ago when a friend encouraged her to try it. As well as being fun, hooping was very good exercise, she said. “I used to be double the size I am now. It’s a fun way to exercise and tone up. It doesn’t feel like you’re slogging yourself out in the gym. You can put some tunes on and give it a go.” Want more info? Check out the website and Facebook event page.

She’s hosting a Latin Night fundraising dinner as well on February 4th at 7pm at Rio’s Brazillian restaurant in Richmond. So what does Camilleri think of her spinning up help for those in need? 2012 Hot Fitness Trends Australia: Hooping

January 9, 2012 in Australia / New Zealand, Health and Spirit

Hooper What are the hot fitness trends for 2012 down under in Australia for the new year? The Sunday Mail reports that one of them most definitely is hooping while giving props to the Australian hoopmakers at Coola Hoops. Beverly Hadgraft writes, “Get killer abs and obliques while strengthening your back, glutes and quads and improving your balance, coordination and flexibility. It’s a cardiovascular workout as well: 10 minutes of hooping burns more than 95 calories. Don’t go pinching the kids’ hoops, though.” It’s true, when you’re an adult you need an adult-sized hoop. The fact that they’re larger and they weigh more makes them easier to use for everyone.

Roue Cyr: Australia

Neal Holmes

You can find Neal Holmes at Docklands in Melbourne, Australia, every week practicing his new “party trick” – spinning around inside roué cyr or simple wheel. Unlike most circus acts, the wheel is a 21st century phenomenon. Neal says there is evidence that people where doing it in the 1940s, but it has only become popular this century. He told Docklands News that he discovered the device less than a year ago on YouTube while he was in China working inside a dinosaur as part of the amazingly successful Melbourne-based production “Walking with Dinosaurs”. He was dumbstruck at what he was seeing and realized he had an opportunity to create a signature act that he could call his own in Australia. So he bought the equipment off the internet via Montreal, Canada, and when it arrived not even a year ago he began putting his heart, soul and many, many waking hours into it. It was a steep learning curve, but Neal is now sufficiently confident enough to have obtained a busker’s license. He’ll be performing regularly at Southbank.
