Christmas Gift from Wyoming to South Africa

December 22, 2011 in Africa, Children, World Hoop Day

South African Farm School Hula HoopsA couple of years ago Natallie De Leon Brooks met Nicky Jansen van Vuuren online, a woman that had been volunteering as a translator at Nthebe, a farmschool in South Africa. After learning about the schools conditions, she felt compelled to do something. For the past five years Nicky has been throwing a Christmas party for these kids. She collects used toys, treats & donations of any kind to try to make it the best possible Christmas she can, on her own time. This year Natallie used World Hoop Day as the perfect opportunity to be a part of it. She raised the funds for supplies, gathered a team of lovely souls to make the hoops and the hoops from Casper, Wyoming, were distributed at this year’s Christmas party in Nthebe. Natallie told Hooping.org, “Maybe Im a little emotional, but these kids have written me letters as my friends. Through videos and photos I’ve become so inspired to do more for them. I’ve always known with all my heart that Africa would play a role in my life. Little did I know, it would be through 150 smiling faces inside hoops! I feel blessed beyond measure.”

Amazing Hoop Race South Africa: Results and More

The Amazing Hoop Race, Hooping.org’s new revolutionary contest that began with fourteen teams competing in a virtual hula hoop race around the world, landed this week in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they received challenge scores from our South African host. How did Sass assign point values for our South African Kwaito Hoop Bliss challenge? The Vista Point video submissions for this week were scored for 1) Hoop Bliss, 2) South African Realism / Kwaito Inspiration, 3) Hooping and Partner Integration, and 4) Overall Video Presentation. Scores (0 to 10) were assigned for each of these four areas and there were no point deductions this week for posting after deadline or running overtime.

The Vista Points (40% of each team’s total) were then combined with our earlier Travel Point and Pit Stop Point totals (30% of each team’s total), along with the final 30% score which came directly from you, our viewing audience. Although the overwhelming popularity of The Amazing Hoop Race crashed our server unexpectedly, taking Hooping.org offline for four hours, once we were back voting was extended by four hours to help compensate. We’d like to thank everyone for your participation and for all of the patience and understanding we received during yesterday’s technical difficulties. Further steps are already being taken behind the scenes to help ensure this will not happen again.

And now, having received the scores from South Africa, we will now find out which team came in first for the second leg of The Amazing Hoop Race and which three teams have been eliminated. Read the rest of this entry →

Amazing Hoop Race 2nd Leg Starts Now

October 19, 2011 in Africa, Features

Amazing Hoop Race Logo Small For those just tuning into The Amazing Hoop Race, our revolutionary new contest sending hula hoop teams of two on a virtual race around the world, here’s what you need to know: We started with 14 amazing teams and the race was explained and it began, sending everyone into a tailspin and to the airport. Those who figured out the clue landed in Porto Alegre, Brazil where three teams were eliminated. Now that are teams have had adequate rest at the pit stop for this leg of the race, we are moving on.

Detour Looks like your Travel Points for this leg of the race will be in the form of a Detour. Remember, a Detour presents each team with a decision between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons. Typically one task is less physically demanding, while the other requires some amount of time or thinking to complete. The decision about which task to attempt lies solely with the team. A team may choose to switch tasks. Once a team has completed a task and recorded a travelogue video documentation of it they can move on. Remember, travelogue videos do not need to be fancy.

Each team will post in the comments below which of the two detour options they would like to take on for this leg of the race and your choices are: MILD or WILD? Before you make up your mind, however, you probably want to know where you are going. So allow me to introduce you to a very special guest, someone who will be your hostess for this second leg of the race. Read the rest of this entry →

Killer Whales and Hula Hoops

October 18, 2011 in Africa, Male, Videos

While the killer whales don’t seem to love hula hoops like the dolphins, or perhaps they’re just waiting for a hoop that is more their size, Anton Feun takes time out at a research station on Marion Island in South Africa to hoop it up before turning his hoop into a portal to the undersea world. It’s quite stunning actually.
