How to Build a Bike Rack for Your Hoops

bike rack for hoops While we wrote about this a couple years ago, there have been a number of inquiries, mostly from hoopers going to Burning Man, asking for advice on transporting hoops while riding a bicycle. Jay has instructions for how to build a bike rack for hoola hoops with excellent visuals on how to make it happen. He made his for about $40. He says, "I tested it with four hoops and i barely even noticed them when riding around. Now I just need to decorate the PVC as that white is ug-ly..."

I made one for my playa bike this year. It was easy to do! The hardest part was attaching the rack to my OLD SCHOOL Schwinn bike.

Thanks so much for this post!

I am planning to do the Aids Lifecycle in June 2008 (I'm going to sign up at the info meeting Dec. 6), and I'm wondering what everyone thinks is the best way to bring a hoop... Do you think that this rack idea is best, or will it be a pain to have it attached for 545 miles, and I should look into getting a collapsable hoop instead? How does the rack hold up when you go fast?

You're riding 545 miles and you think you'll have energy to hoop? Are you nuts?

Yes, I am nuts. I think people will think its fun, and cheerful, and will appreciate my nutziness. I am totally serious about being nuts, and wanting to bring a hoop (or three, because people will want to try, I'm sure. They always do!).

What sizes do you need to cut the pvc down to from the 10'?

An AIDS Lifecycle follow up: I did bring a hoop on the ride by being really nice (and bringing a bag full of cookies) to the Gear and Tent Truck Roadies. It went along with my gear and I picked it up in camp every night, often to, "Hey, its hoop girl!" I did use it on a few nights, but more importantly, I got about 20 big grins over it a day! On the last night, after noticing that Carlos (my Gear and Tent Truck Roadie) had spent a lot of time hooping when I was on the road, I decided to give it to him as his ALC7 souvenir. He said it was one of the best gifts he'd ever gotten! So how about that, folks? I am nuts, I did hoop on The Ride, and I made a ton of people smile because of it, including myself! And yeah, the bike rack idea was not the way to go in this circumstance, so I worked around it :D

My dad made one of these for my bike for our annual family/friend adventure up to Iowa for R.A.G.B.R.A.I. (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa). It worked great!! All the other riders really got a kick out of seeing me ride down the road with my hoops. The only downside is that the bike becomes a little wobbly with the added weight and height+length. Totally worth it!

OK, nothing wrong with this design. But it's rather big and expensive for me. Anyone know a simpler/cheaper way to carry hoops by bike? Beyond slinging one over the shoulder? Thanks, chezztone

Our two tracks for the week start off with Cosmic Cowboys and their new release "One Last Whisper." We're especially loving the Hiro Remix which is why we've added it to the Hoop Sounds iPod below. Check it out and other mixes and download yours on iTunes by clicking:

Next we cool things down with a track for some dreamier hooping. The track is called "Ruby" from the new release from Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté of Mali. We think you're going to like it. Give it a listen on the iPod and get your copy on iTunes by clicking:
