Hooping Idol 7 Sinatra Week: Let’s Swing & Sway!

Welcome back to our seventh exciting season of Hooping Idol! Our award winning contest is leading us all on an ever spinning search for the next great hooper star and if you’re just tuning in, here’s what you’ve missed so far. We put out the Casting Call and introduced you to our 21 contestants for season 7. They got things started off with Super Seventies Week and then 6 were eliminated. The remaining 15 spun it darker for Goth Week and then 5 more were eliminated. Which brings us to week 3, Frank Sinatra Week.

For their third challenge, our top ten were served up something else designed to really throw them for a loop. They were told to choose a Frank Sinatra soundtrack for their video and to really wow us. They were schooled again on our Ten Easy Ways to Improve Your Hooping Video, and were told to make it count because at the end of Sinatra Week, three more would be going home.

Hooping Idol is not only a competition, it’s also a golden opportunity to learn and grow along the way thanks to the guidance of our incredible panel of international hooping star celebrity judges. They know first hand what being a hooping star is all about. So who is seated at the judge’s table for season 7? Allow us to introduce you to:

BABZ ROBINSON

Babz Robinson Our third judge for our new season of Hooping Idol is the incomparable Babz Robinson (Website, YouTube, FB & @babzrobinson). Coming to us from the great northern lands of Canada where she has been spinning things up since 2003 – hooping’s first Canadian connection back in the day has always been the one teaching others. It wasn’t long before she was creating community and becoming the iconic original hooper on the platforms at Shambhala, Motion Notion and other festivals throughout Western Canada. The Hoopie Award winner for Instructor of the Year, Tutorial of the Year, Hooper of the Year Canada and Hooper Hall of Fame Inductee is a force to be reckoned with too. Her awesomely advanced, professional and incredibly helpful hooping tutorials, which she shares with the world for fun and for free, have made her a perennial favorite amongst hoopers the world over. If Babz is making something, you know it’s gonna be good. We’re so psyched to have her back sharing her Hooping Idol expertise for another season. She lives in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

Lila Chupa-Hoops Lila Chupa-Hoops (Website, FB, YouTube & @lila_chupahoops) started hooping in 2010 and did her first stage performance only a few months later at Paris Decompression. Her international hooping journey really took off in 2012 when she was cast for our second season of Hooping Idol. Lila knows just what it takes to succeed on Idol too having stayed in the competition right through to the season finale. That’s when she quit her job at Notre-Dame de Paris too to become a full time hoop teacher and entertainer. “I found my hoopstyle in the pinup/vintage world and distinguished myself in a lot of european burlesque festivals showcasing one of a kind hooptease choreographies,” she told us. Aside from teaching and performing Lila also runs Rendez-v’HOOP, the hooping convention of France. She’s won Hoopie Awards for European Hooper of the Year, Doubles Hooper of the Year and Solo Performance of the Year too. Hooping Idol 7 Sinatra Week: Our Top Ten!

1. POCKET MONSTER: LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: So sweet, so fresh! I really loved your energy all throughout your entry! The only reason I gave you an 8 instead of a 9 on video presentation is you talked on camera a few times. It really takes the watcher out of the moment and is a little bit of a pet peeve of mine. Imagine if you were watching a performer on stage and they started talking to someone off stage in the middle of their performance. Yeah, its kinda like that. I really enjoyed your light tough breaks sequence, super flowy with only a couple slight wobbles. Awesome!

LISA: Hey pocket! What a cute video from you this week! There were a lot of shots with great composition, beautiful backgrounds vs you in that lovely red dress. Tt’s super pleasing for the eye so thank you for that! One of the things I would have loved to see you do was a pirouette or two in that dress, that would have looked so pretty! I really like the involvement of your friend, but you didn’t give me the biggest Sinatra vibe, more like a beautifully dressed girl with vintage hair on a summers day. Skill wise, I think those breaks are just amazing, you did fantastic on them. 2 minutes into the video I can only just about see the really awesome double tricks you’re doing because the colours of the hoops just disappear into the background!! So a different colour hoop choice would have really helped you out there. I would love to see more on body hooping from you, I want to see that hoop get down to your knees!

BABZ: Oh my god! So freakin’ cute! I was sitting in front of my screen smiling like an idiot watching this! Although it was almost a minute before you started hooping, so I would probably think about a shorter intro next time. Loved your smile and all the engagement with the camera/audience! Your doubles work is great, but I’d love to see more transitions between moves rather than showing one and cutting to the next move. I really enjoyed that there were some fresh moves in here that I hadn’t seen in your other videos and it looked like you were having a blast which makes you really fun to watch and keeps your video really entertaining and engaging.

LILA: What a cute video to start with! I liked the fact there were many different angle shots, it kept a lot of dynamisn and not a single time I was bored! I loved your outfit, hairstyle, the location, your smile and attitude towards the camera. About hoopflow, thank you for being always in motion, spinning, jumping etc… it is very pleasing to watch.

2. DUREZZA: SANTIAGO, CHILE. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Durezza! I love love LOVE your expressiveness in this. Big jump up from last week! I did see you talking on camera quite a bit, it is distracting! If you hadn’t made that blunder, your presentation score would be higher. The double hoop over the shoulder rolls at 1:23 are so awesome!! Love it! I am so in love with all the little touches too. The shot of you straightening your tie and the heel click at the end. Those really up leveled your whole video!

LISA: This is what I am talking about! This week you did not only give me those fantastic skills I’ve gotten used to from you, but you also gave me some show business! You moved your body whilst performing your tricks and you did not shy away from being in front of the camera! It makes you about 100x more entertaining and I am loving it. There are some shots in your video this week where you’ve cut half of your hoops out of the shot, as well as your end titles, its details like these that you can easily fix so don’t slack off and lose presentation points cause it’s completely unnecessary. I think you did a great job on your video this week!

BABZ: Yes yes yes! Fantastic shots and edits with pigeons and panning! Really love the body movement you are putting into your dancing which flows through into the hoop. I’m so stoked to see the incredible eye contact and smiles and I get such a big Sinatra vibe from watching this. Shots like the one with the cufflinks really sell the theme. I love that over the head continuous helicopter you do! I totally loooooved watching this! You really knocked it out of the park this week, well done! Oh, but try not to move your lips when your singing along to your music 🙂

LILA: I can see you’ve been listening to some of our advice, that’s cool! It felt like I was finally discovering your face. Great smile all along the video and great footwork to bring the Sinatra theme (loved the ending with the hat). I also appreciated the fact you’ve added more flow with one hoop, it really went well with the music, especially Fly me to the Moon – that is very dancy. If you want to make it even better, you can try to use more the accents of the music with your hoop tricks or edits. Be careful with the lip singing if it doesn’t fit the lyrics.

3. LUCY FORD: NOMADIC HOOPER, ANYWHERE. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Lucy! OMG the tap dancing, SO fun! I really liked all the over head shots and that you were able to really camp it up ☺! When you are doing your forward angle shoulder hooping, putting a little arch in your back will improve the look of it a lot. I would also like to see your rolls get a little cleaner. Focus on making full contact! I really enjoyed your hooping overall though, super fun!

LISA: Hey Lucy! What a wonderful video you’ve given us this week! I absolutely adore your dress and those tap moves are just divine, thoroughly entertaining! My favourite was the use of that downwards camera angle where we can see that beautiful on body hooping combined with those lovely folds. You put a massive smile on my face and I think your personality is just oozing off my screen! I would love to see you do some multiple hoops next week. If you’re not up for multiple hooping on your body, how about giving us multiple hoops in the video? Can you try a stack? Can you get some friends involved who are also hooping?
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 8

BABZ: While I abhor long videos you somehow managed to keep me engaged the entire time. Probably because you were oozing charisma and you’re editing with the music was really on point. The scenes with the alley and the card game went really well with the theme and song choice, but without being cheesy and distracting which seems to be a bit of a challenge for others. Head hooping with your hair down?! Skillllllz! I can also appreciate that you can flow really well with a single hoop, and not only that, but different sizes of single hoops! You’ve got some good engagement going with smiles and eye contact, but I would add even more. Also liked that there was a great beginning and end in your video.

LILA: Wow, tap dancing and hooping looks so awesome! I bet it must be really difficult to manage the different rhythms and movements, but you did great with the on body hooping. I’m glad this week’s theme brought an opportunity to showcase your other skills. Loved the bird view shots too, it gave a whole new visual aspect of your hooping. Your smile is radiant, thank you for bringing your hoop joy in the competition!

ANAH: Holy Shamoley, Hannah!! The split screen doppelganger choreo was SO next level! I am totally in LOVE with everything about this video! This is the FIRST time I have EVER given straight 10’s in any Hooping Idol competition, way to bring it!

LISA: Wait what? That’s both you no? or do you have a twin sister? or just a really great video editor?? I love this! That beautiful sunlight popped off the screen immediately for me and what a perfect song choice to go with that beautiful light! You gave me a cute little story that made me SO happy! I love your foot hooping and your cute dance steps, you’ve got skill and you know how to show it off, that one handed helicopter is amazing, but have you tried switching hands? If you use your right hand in the hoop that you’re spinning overhead and you use your left hand to do the helicopter around you while you’re spinning anticlockwise, that trick will be so much easier for you! I am not saying you’re doing it wrong at all cause it looks great, it just caught my eye and I think it will be a huge relief for you once you get it down. (left hand flourishes the hoop towards the right, while you spin anticlockwise with the third hoop in your right hand overhead… give it a go!)

BABZ: Great dance moves! Super cute and fun to watch. Charleston while leg hooping?! What the what?! Like the story and really loved watching your video. I would have liked to have seen a little more flow where you’re getting into the music — don’t get me wrong, you danced incredilbly well to the music with the Sinatra theme pouring out of the movement, but it seemed to be missing a bit of your individual style. I also feel that the cool editing that you did to help you tell your story also kind of worked against you a bit, because it may have diminished your opportunity for locations with different shots and angles. Who knew everyone would step up their game so much this week?!

I loved how you got into the girly and boyish style, throwing some awesome jazzy charleston footwork here! I totally want to try the leg hooping kicks now, so much inspiration! I like the fact you worked on a sequence, that’s a really professional video! Good job Hannah!

5. SYDNEY HANNON: TIGRE, ARGENTINA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sydney, I just love this theme, so fun! I think you captured this song really really well. As much as I loved the sequences in your red glittery outfit, I feel like you were concentrating really hard and it came across a little stiff. If you practice your combos to music and drill them like crazy, you will find more flow and ease and it will show. Your lighting was a little blown out too in these segments. I really enjoyed the variety of movements and settings you had. Awesome work!

LISA: Hey Sydney! Thank you for giving me a huge variety of different kinds of hoop skills this week! It makes a video so much more enjoyable to watch! I loved that doubles sequence at 0.50 and I think it’s fantastic you got the 4 hoops on arms in there too! Some beautiful cinematography from you this week, although I did wish that the scenes filmed indoor looked as crisp as the outdoor ones. That’s just what happens sometimes with a lack of light. I think that red sparkle leotard made up for it cause that was just EVERYTHING! Thanks for a beautiful video this week!

BABZ: Wow, do you ever have great performance skills! You have some great repertoire with multiples, but it left me jonesing for more of your personal style and dance to show through within your flow as I find that style is always “Performy” style, then the style can end up looking a bit generic even though you are doing incredible things with your hoops. It was really fantastic to see you transition through your doubles moves rather than cutting too quickly from scene to scene. Keep up all the smiling and eye contact!

LILA: First, this is one of my favourite tracks from Sinatra. Great addition of some comedy and multiple locations to enhance the lyrics of the song. As a foreigner I don’t always pay attention to the lyrics, but then it all makes sense now. I also like the few hat tricks you added in your performance! It is too bad you didn’t have so much space for your showgirl shots. Some of the tricks looked a little bit sloppy, probably because of the lack of space, otherwise, I’ve seen some nice transitions here.

6. KITTYHOOP: TOULOUSE, FRANCE. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Kittyhoop, you are adorable. I loved the campy vibe and that dress!! Your hooping is fun and spicy. I would like to see more variation in speed and more dance integration through your body. I like that you were smiling a lot, but I would like to see more character depth explored. Get more active with your face! Think less is more. As in, slow down a little here and there (don’t try so hard), and let your face go in and out of smiling rather than having a fixed smile the whole time. In other words, relax! You got this and you are doing great – just chill and flow! I would have liked to see other locations/angles as well for variety.

LISA: Hey Kitty! My favourite thing in this video was your costume changes behind the curtain! I feel like it’s such a beautiful Sinatra song, but I would have loved to see you do a bit more with the literal translation of that. Wouldn’t it be great if you attempted to actually fly? I think this video would have really benefitted from a bit more of a story and some changes in scenery also. I just can’t help but feel like you could have done a bit more. I know it’s a pretty tough theme, but it’s always the way in Hooping Idol, something to throw you off and make you work that bit harder! I think your doubles sequence was amazing, that wrap around the body weave was just perfect. And please be careful with speeding up your footage! I’d rather see one absolutely stunning sequence in real time than more of the same doubled up! Your costumes were beautiful, but I think you can have a sit down and think more about the story line next week.
Theme: 7
Skills/Flow: 7
Overall Video Presentation: 6
Total Score: 20

BABZ: Some super cute outfits and it was great to see a few more transitions within your multi hooping. I think a filter applied in editing could have made for a stronger presence of the theme. And while cute, I feel like you could lose your lovely assistant as I feel it detracts from what you are doing with your hoops. I would still encourage you to choose shorter songs as this one was still one of the longest videos this week. And I’m still hoping I’ll get to see you really flow and rock out with your hoops. I really liked to see the close ups of your lovely face added to your editing as sometimes people are too far away from the camera all the time in order to get their whole body and hoop in the shot, but your close ups really help engage the audience.
Theme: 8

LILA: I’m glad you’ve been taking the advice from the judges and added more flow to your piece. It was better to see how you get into the tricks and nice surprise with the locks, worked great with this theme. Good job hooping with the heels, you really put effort into your look as usual. Loved the sustained spinning with the dress and your different outfit changes, totally my jam! About the video presentation, you know my opinion on « speed up ». You can speed the video to help the story like walking somewhere, but speeding up the actual hooping is not the right decision. You have to make decisions.

7. HOOPFUL V: BELMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: OOH! I love the opening hoop/umbrella spinning. Unique and creative! I really liked how you paired your choreo with the lyrics, nice touch! I noticed one small blunder right towards the end. Remember, you may not think a small moment falling out of flow is noticeable, but it is! I would have shot that sequence again. I also wish there had been more close ups or variations of angles. But over all, very nicely done!

LISA: So we’ve seen a lot of umbrella’s this week, but no one has incorporated it like you did and I love that! It’s creative and makes me smile! also, I think that move at 0.51 is just brilliant! I think your video this week was super lovely, short and punchy just the way I like it! The pink hoops in front of the theatre look fantastic in contrast with the white and I just adore that sequence you do there! Great stuff. Next week I’d love to see some more hoops from you! Multiple hoops, pretty shapes with hoops or friends with hoops, there is always a way to make your video more over the top!

BABZ: There were a lot of umbrellas this week, but you my dear owned the umbrella hooping! Clearly you need to develop this into a burlesque act, or maybe you already have! Really well done! You have some really awesome moves, but I’d love to see more of your personal flow come out through your movement. Really enjoyed that transition from the black and white to colour and that it was not only a great little intro, but that it got us right into things quick. I would have liked some tighter shots of you and your great skills to help us connect with you even more. Your theme was really strong, but I missed some of your flow as it’s one of my favourite parts of watching you hoop.

LILA: I could really feel you embracing the music once again, spinning and jumping around! I liked how you had full sequences of flow prepared and not numerous edits. Especially the first sequence with the umbrella, it felt flawless and very creative. I love when hoopers mix hoop with other objects, there are so many possibilities with a hula hoop! Little tip: for your last trick with hooping on one leg, try to hold the other hoop on your opposite hand to make a nice box shape, it creates a better visual impact.

8. CHARLOTTE DILLARD: ATLANTA, GEORGIA, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Ooh! I love the outfit so much! I kind of want one 😉. There are some great shots here right off the bat and so cool how you were able to roll the hoop perfectly to the bench like that! I noticed you dropped your character a little bit. I would like to see your character/personality shine all the way through! Your hooping was quite clean, but I would like to see a little more energy. Not as in hooping faster, but more electricity through your movements, more passion! This is the only reason I dropped your points on skills/flow a little. Lets see your inner FIRE!
Theme: 10

LISA: Hey Charlotte! You grabbed this opportunity by the balls! I LOVE what you did with the theme and that we were actually living the song through your story! That costume was the perfect choice for a hula hoop/Sinatra challenge and those pink hoops look phenomenal. Your 5 split is looking great, but I’d love for you to focus on calming down the tempo of the hoop on your knees, it will make it look that much cleaner. In an ideal world they are all going at the exact same rhythm! You gave me beautiful cinematography, well composed shots, great skills and a thorough execution of the theme. Excellent work!
Theme: 9.5

BABZ: The backdrop and your outfit went with the song, but it just isn’t as fully “Sinatra” as most of the other videos were this week. Maybe applying a filter in the editing process would have helped you add more of a vintage Sinatra feel to your video. You still seem a little bored with your single hoop flow which I’m sure is just concentration, but I want you to imagine attitude and sass and soul are a big bottle of syrup and now I want you to cover yourself and your hoop in that syrup, and through your movement show us how much you looove hooping 🙂

9. CALLUM BAKER: BRISTOL, ENGLAND, UK. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Aww, how I love a good love story! So sweet! And that arm balance, nice!! Both the beginning and ending were a little confusing for me, but overall a lovely, feel good video with some great movements. I especially like the wonky rolls with three hoops. There is not much I would change about this hooping wise, but video wise I wish the beginning and ending were a little more cohesive and easier to understand. Did you know her before and had a falling out? Or were you watching a video from the future after you meet and fall in love? So many questions!! Hmmmmm. For this reason only I had to give you a slightly lower video score.

LISA: Hey Callum! Ha, that opening song on your computer is DJ Food’s “The Crow” which happens to be one of my favourite tunes ever! I’ve come to expect a lot from you and you have definitely not disappointed me this week! Your videos are always engaging with a storyline and I just love your not-so-stranger-anymore girlfriend in the video! Next level unlocked. Some great on-body action from you this week, but most of all: how amazing does juggling look with LED hoops!! Hmm? brilliant! It’s a shame that LED hoops are such a nightmare to film cause the dark shots almost seem slightly out of focus, that’s not your fault, it’s the LEDs, and it’s pretty impossible to get right unless you have a camera that costs what you might as well buy a house for. This is all I want in a Hooping Idol video: A cute story, a smile on my face and a great variety of kick ass hula hoop moves. Tick, tick, tick!

BABZ: Some great editing as usual and I totally giggled at the slow mo hair flip and that wink! So good! Although I think your song was a bit long and it was a full minute before there was any hooping, I liked the story telling – but I think it has to happen faster. Super stoked I got to see you hoop with one hoop this week for more than than 3 seconds. Yay! Was also really great to see the lighter side of Callum this week, but I’m still looking for more soul in your movement, but that’s just me. But then again I am one of your judges and I want soul damn it! I know you’re english and that could be hard for you, but you can always pretend! 😉 Channel your inner drag queen or maybe try on a matador. Fake it ‘till you make it can work wonders if you feel like a knob wiggling around on camera. But I promise, it will be more interesting to watch. If you could harness the power of flow I feel like you and your 5 hoop jugging would be unstoppable! Don’t forget to stabilize the shakey shots that were not shot from a tripod next week.

LILA: Ahah, that teenage face was hilarious, did you shave for the video? Awesome, I almost didn’t recognize you with the suit, the hair back and the romantic attitude. Filming in the night is not that easy because the quality is not as good as in daylight, but you fit it to your song choice. The balance and juggling shots look so good with the LEDs and the bridge. Nice appearance of Lisa, the theme was perfect to show a bit of your partner hoop routine in the competition!

10. SHARKBAIT: LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sharkbait! I love the story line, love the skirt and beautiful effortless two hoop skills. I would like to see your rolls make more contact. If you play with exhaling right before your release as well as lifting your wrist right after you let go of the hoop, it will make a huge difference in your rolls! I love the doppelganger split screen! There was a wobble in between your two screens in the field and I would have loved to see the sequence at 2:02 synchronized better, that would have been so fun to watch! Still pretty freakin bad ass though 😉

LISA: Hey Sharkie! First of all, that skirt is just EVERYTHING! My favourite shot in the video was the downward shot where you are spiralling and your skirt is all poofing up – it’s just divine! Now I didn’t really get so much Frank Sinatra from your video except the music, it was maybe more – spanish soap opera? But in saying that I got some beautiful videography, and stunning backgrounds, with your beautiful, relaxed and skillful hooping. Maybe not 100% there on the theme, but I really love to watch you use your beautiful hoops (that sequence at 0.58 is just perfection). What a great way to finish this week!

BABZ: Where are you and do you have a spare couch?! I’m coming to visit. I can’t believe the hollyhocks are blooming! Loved how you made the latin angle work with this week’s theme. The shots of you from above with your spinning skirt were so beautiful. I really enjoy that your flow is so smooth and effortless looking and that the song was translated into your movement more this week. However, your face still looked a little bored. You did great with adding more eye contact this week, but I still want even more! 🙂

LILA: What a lovely flow! I loved this spanish atmosphere, beautiful outfit and location. It is funny how you got the same idea with Hannah, that’s okay, you both have a different style. Everything was very smooth with the music, I loved the sustained spinning from above, almost wanted it to last longer! On the skill level, I dig the continuous reverse escalator into the lock, definitely a highlight of the video.
