Hooping Idol 7 Season Finale

Hooping Idol 7 Season Finale: The Final 3 Spin To Win!

It’s our super exciting Hooping Idol 7 Season Finale!!! Our final three finalists are giving it their all this week for their final hooping video of the competition. And this one was entirely up to them. After all, if they are going for the title and a shot at winning our Hooping Idol 7 Ultimate Prize Package, they should be doing so entirely on their own inspiration. No theme, no soundtrack they all needed to hoop to; they’re free to really wow us for the Hooping Idol 7 Season Finale. The hooper that delivers the total package at this final stage in our search for the next great hooper star will become our new Hooping Idol and spin away with the win. With a race this tight, it could be any one of them and we couldn’t be more proud of all three of our amazing finalists.

If you’re just tuning in, here’s what you’ve missed so far. We put out the intiial Casting Call and introduced you to our 21 contestants for season 7. They got things started off with Super Seventies Week and then 6 were eliminated. The remaining 15 got gothic for Goth Week and then 5 more were eliminated. Which brought us to Sinatra Week and thanks to a tie only 2 left the mix. Then we ventured somewhere magical for Fantasy Week and 3 more were eliminated. This brought us to our legendary Performance Week where they all perform to the same song and 2 more were eliminated – and now, our season finale!

Hooping Idol is, of course, not only a competition. It’s a golden opportunity to learn and grow along the way thanks to the guidance of our incredible panel of international hooping star celebrity judges. They know first hand what being a hooping star is all about. So who is seated at the judge’s table for season 7? Allow us to introduce you to:

BABZ ROBINSON

Coming to us from the great northern lands of Canada where she has been spinning things up since 2003 – hooping’s first Canadian connection back in the day has always been the one teaching others. It wasn’t long before she was creating community and becoming the iconic original hooper on the platforms at Shambhala, Motion Notion and other festivals throughout Western Canada. The Hoopie Award winner for Instructor of the Year, Tutorial of the Year, Hooper of the Year Canada and Hooper Hall of Fame Inductee is a force to be reckoned with too. Lila knows just what it takes to succeed on Idol too having stayed in the competition right through to the season finale. That’s when she quit her job at Notre-Dame de Paris too to become a full time hoop teacher and entertainer. “I found my hoopstyle in the pinup/vintage world and distinguished myself in a lot of european burlesque festivals showcasing one of a kind hooptease choreographies,” she told us. Aside from teaching and performing Lila also runs Rendez-v’HOOP, the hooping convention of France. She’s won Hoopie Awards for European Hooper of the Year, Doubles Hooper of the Year and Solo Performance of the Year too. Hooping Idol 7 Season Finale

1. POCKET MONSTER: LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Nikki, you are adorable! I love the expressiveness of your hooping in the opening sequence. I especially liked your roll-coin flip-roll at :38. Very smooth! I love your hooping in general. A good mix of styles and dance! Video wise, I felt it should have had more story. Except for the beginning and the ending, it kind of looked like just another flow video in cool locations. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that, but considering the nature of the competition I would have hoped to see you go all out!

LISA: Hey Pocket! Wow, there is just so much to love about this video, I love the way you’ve set up a small narrative, but really just wanted to show us your most bad-ass hoop tricks, and dear god are they bad-ass!! You must have the most perfect chest roll in the history of hula hooping! It’s perfection, I could watch you do about 10 more of those! What I love the most about your stye is your somehow endless supply of quick little switches, flips and flourishes, they just seem to come at me at every other second and I have no idea how you got in and out of most of that. Just beautiful! It’s impossible not to watch this video with a smile on my face with all those beautiful spring colours, insane tricks and ridiculous transitions! You look like you’re having an amazing time and in the end that is certainly what it is all about. My only criticism is that when we get so into our trick patterns it can be hard to keep up for the viewer, so even though I know you are completely rocking out, it would be great to see you stop and take a break every now and then. Do an amazing trick, pause, breathe, do something more simple, or move your body and then go into the next one. It will make it so much more palatable to watch and much easier to translate into a performance for a live audience, rather than someone who just happens to be there and is looking at you play on your own – does that make sense? I think the one thing you would benefit from so much is if you sign up to a weekly hip hop class, that is something I imagine will completely elevate all these incredible moves to the next level, when you start moving with your hoops! Excellent job!

BABZ: I don’t know why, but I always cringe when a video starts in someone’s bedroom. While I can appreciate that this was part of the story, for me it always comes off as unprofessional. Your hooping is always so nice to watch, but you didn’t seem to be dancing much this week and your feet were staying more or less in the same place with you standing straight up nearly the whole time. This ends up giving your video and your hooping a flat quality, and when paired with the 4:33 second song that didn’t change pace or vary in any way, made it feel monotonous towards the end. You had some stunning backdrops and your doubles are always fascinating to watch as well as that great smile. Thanks for all the hard work you put in over what must seem like forever! Your videos are always a pleasure to watch 🙂

LILA: Your flow is like butter. So smooooth! Your tricks are very clean with a great diversity. The set for this video is absolutely stunning, architecture and colorful flowers make a beautiful background for your hoopdance. I loved all the different locations, but I wished I could have connected with you a little bit more as it is the final round of the competition. This is a beautiful flow video, but something is kind of missing to me for « hey ! I’m the next hooping idol » ! My favourite video from you was definitely Performance Week where I could really see you engage with your audience and the music. You can be proud of yourself and I’m looking forward to seeing you perform more in the future.

NICK: Lots of very technical flowing tricks here, a very large repertoire, with some interesting variations on just about everything you work with. I hope you haven’t missed a trick though running with a dream sequence in the Hooping Idol Finale – and I hope you didn’t sell yourself short because of it. Shot and edited very well, lovely settings and a really nice build up of layers with the hoops.

MARYEVE: I put 5 for the theme because this video looks a little bit too ordinary for the finale. I would have appreciated more creativity or more story. You installed something magical with the candy forest, why did not you go on with this idea? You have good skills and flow. Most of your tricks are really clean. You look in control and relaxed even when you do hard tricks. Instead of staying always in the same place, it will be even more interesting if you add more dance, legs movements or moves across the landscape. The place where you’re filming is really beautiful and romantic. We can feel the fresh summer vibe. You look really happy.

COURTNEY: You look so happy, great expression! And some beautiful scenery. The theme is sweet, but it doesn’t really provide any depth. Your flow is beautiful and everything looks really clean and nice. I just really like to see the theme you started in the beginning have some more purpose with the video as the whole. It feels kind of tacked on. All in all though, your hooping is superb and your shots are clean and nice! Great job this year, Hooping Idol is no joke and so much work! Good luck!

BETH ANNE: Nikki, lemme just say it has been super fun to follow your Hooping Idol journey! Congrats!! You are so inspiring and talented! Your Finale video, WOW, so beautiful!!! It’s every hoopers dream to skip/dance in a forest of hoops. I love how you had all your hoops laid out, and lollipops, ahhhh, great idea, reminds me a lil of my Finale! One of my favorite parts is your smile at :19-:30, I feel your happy energy and its breathtaking!! Oh and that ending, HA, so cute! The little details like when your hoop matches the pool at 2:19 and your outfit matches the flowers at 3:43 help make this just so stunning! I like ALL of your doubles work and NICE juggling in the end! Ya got MAD skills girl, good job showing it off!! Great Finale, you should be so proud, good luck!

2. HOOPFUL V: BELMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Vanessa, what a fun idea!! I think this video would have really gone up a notch in impact if you had the camera move A LOT more. For me your were just a little behind the music in excitement, speed and power. Better videography could have made up for that. Your hooping was still fun and smooth (mostly), but with a song like that, you gotta PUNCH IT! Maybe even less smiling and more hooping and “fighting” straight towards the camera. I can see you were trying not to smile towards the end and failing.. ha! I kind of love that about you anyway ☺

LISA: Hey Vanessa! I love this concept and I love me a game of Mortal Kombat! You completely rocked your way through that hillarious track with mega-speed! That’s one of my favourite things about your hooping style, the mad speed you get through your tricks with! Your colourful hoops look fantastic against the background, but I do wish that you would have either stood a bit further away from the camera or just had it zoomed out a bit more because there are some moves where your hoop disappears off screen and that is just not what we need, especially not in the finale!! I do feel like you haven’t taken it 100% to the next level for your final video, I can’t help but wish that you had invited a friend in to fight with you (and you could have won!), and I would have LOVED to see a big stack of hoops for the final trick, but in saying that, I absolutely LOVED that yellow smoke-rocket thing! I want some for my performances (but in pink! where do I get some?).

BABZ: Great theme! I loved how well you integrated your character with your music, theme and even specific moves. And then you just went for it! Killer flow and you look like you’re having a blast. Combined with you beaming at the camera and the crazy upbeat mortal combat remix, for me it was easily the most fun video to watch this week. Not only that, but you kept it short and sweet. Thank you! I would have to say, however, that you could have finished stronger. The four hoops on the waist at the end after the quads on your arms was a bit anticlimactic and seemed to go on for just a fraction too long. But otherwise Awesome! So glad I got to watch so many of your videos, and so glad you got to showcase your epic skills on Hooping Idol. Your videos were always a highlight 🙂

LILA: Whoop! That was quite a surprise! I loved how you brought a high energy video for the final round. Competitive theme but your smile is radiant! The camera setting is simple, but very clear so we don’t get lost in your video. 3 backgrounds, 3 outfits, 3 hoopstyles – the structure is great til your own personal victory moment. From this stage, you are already a winner so congratulations! Going through your videos, I discovered a creative hooper ready to bring your ideas alive through your hoopdance. Almost every week, you would carefully think about your story, your outfits, your setting and special guests/props from your friends, an umbrella to Tracy girl! I particularly enjoyed your presentation, poses and body movement. If there is any piece of advice I can give you for the rest of your hoop journey, it would be to pay more attention to planes and non dominant hand training. I know you can do it and the results are totally worth it !

NICK: A suitable theme for a finale with lots of great hooping, location changes and a build up of hoops attached to the theme. I get that the music comes from the game, but I wasn’t sure it gave you too much natural groove. Bit of a distraction, but a small criticism. Away from that the tricks and the execution of them were great.

COURTNEY: What an interesting theme. I have played some video games similar to this that has a hoop weapon and always thought about combining them. Your flow is on point and looks very nice. Super talent skills. The “rounds” of hooping seem a little blocky and make it hard to get through the whole video. I would have maybe changed up the shots during the round. But I assume you did this to stay in the theme, so I understand. Overall it was lovely hooping and an interesting theme. Nice job this last 2 months and you did a great job making it all the way to the end! Good Luck!

I love video games! While watching, I literally couldn’t wait to see the next round! I like that you went from one to four hoops. Your single hooping is fantastic, at :43 those vertical breaks look amazing! Your quads work is good, I LOVE QUADS! The fast paced song really fits your hoop style perfectly! 3. SHARKBAIT: LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sarah, I am so conflicted! On the one hand this is a really cool and creative video. I loved it! On the other hand, you kind of weren’t the star and neither was the hoop. I would have liked to see you more in the starring role rather than a supporting one. I am not sure if its because the dude with the beard was so committed to his character, or that I didn’t feel your character? Either way it had me wishing you had owned it and made yourself the star (because you are!). The only reason you got an 8 instead of a 9 on your skills/flow is because you still stepped wide for your step out instead of down at 1:15, which tells me your timing is a little off and you need to drill this one more. Your hooping is skilled and smooth otherwise!

LISA: Hey Sharkie! You made it to the finale! And wow, do you seem happy about it or what? You are just radiating off the screen! What a beautiful video you gave us for your final piece! Your friends are fantastic in this, you’ve set a mood and you’re getting in deep. What an awesome way of using mates in a video! I think the set is also amazing, that room that’s just getting smaller and smaller all the time, you’re giving me 1920s sideshow realness! I do have a couple of questions though, there is a sloppy shot at 0.53, what is that all about? It’s you just turning around and moving away? I love your double hoops as per usual, but I wish that when we visit that scene again at 3.52 you would have stepped it up with the skills compared to the first scene, or used 4 hoops, or something! Because we went to this beautiful synchro fire sequence and then I just wanted more after that, not more of the same from the beginning – do you get me? I feel like you’ve done a fantastic job with the videography, theme and idea, but I do wish I would have seen you go absolutely all out on the hooping in this video.

BABZ: So many good facial expressions going on here, I love it! You lost me a bit at the door number two part. It seemed like catastrophic failure was imminent, but then it turned out to be fire hooping and someone that seemed scared was all of a sudden happily fire hooping so I was a little confused by that. Liked that you varied the pace of the video with some of the weird video editing which made it more visually interesting and I thought it all went really well with the vibe of your song. The end was also a bit anticlimactic where the music builds and you’re going to “push the button” but then it just ends and nothing happens. Really great video overall, but I was never really moved. For me I’m all about freestyle over performance style hooping. I’ll always be about passion for the movement and want to watch someone really rock out. But that of course is why there are multiple judges. So nice to watch your progress throughout the entire Hooping idol season 🙂

LILA: That was lovely to involve your circus troupe for your final video! That made me remember my 2012 Hooping Idol submission for Circus Week back in the days with Beats Antique. I was a baby hooper back then! By the way, you’re 21 and hooping for 7 years? Wow, I am so impressed! No surprise your flow looks very « mature », clean and smooth. I enjoyed all the circus ideas though it felt you were a little off the main subject, maybe too many shots without hooping. What I like most about you is your slow flow, so controlled and well balanced, hoopnotizing me everytime! I am still inspired by your Sinatra video and even drilled a few of your moves! You are young and already so experienced with hooping, I am excited to follow on your journey and see more of your creations.

NICK: Definitely the video with the most character with a wild and eccentric theme befitting of a finale. The hooping is engaging, maybe not the greatest depth with tricks, but I don’t believe that’s ever been entirely what this competition is about. Do what you do well and sell it. That seems to be what you did and it makes it very watchable; with a Tom Waits style narrative thrown in for good measure.

MARYEVE: I like that you made an effort in putting a concept together. Since it’s kind of freak circus, maybe you could wear some clown make up or do something with your hair. This music and location are perfect for the video. Your hooping is good, but sometimes you look too careful. I think maybe your friends take too much space in this video. You could have played the character of the presenter. I feel like I didn’t see you enough.

COURTNEY: Sweet video Sharkbait! Interesting editing and idea. I love the circus theme! Circus is so much fun and good character exploration too! I would have liked more hooping for the finale video to really show yourself off, but I understand you were trying to do something different. There is definitely lots of awesome hooping, but the story arch kind of took away from that in a way. Nevertheless, still love your video and your style. You put so much hard work in this year, and did such a good job! Good Luck!

BETH ANNE: Sarah, I’ll start off with a big CONGRATS!! I have so enjoyed watching your journey unfold! I really like your Finale video. I like how you and your friends portrayed the Beats Antique song, very creative and such a good idea! I really see more of your playful, fun, comedic side in this and I like that! I bet we would have a GREAT time hooping/hanging together! The scene with Firefox is very cool! Your hooping is SO clean, clean stalls, unique doubles stuff! I love that wedgie to knee break at 1:06, that’s sweet!! I do wish I would have seen more of YOU hooping though, because it is STUNNING! Your costume is SO perfect! You’ve got a real unique video here!! Good job and good luck!
