Hooping Idol 7 Performance Week: The Final 5 Spin It Up!

Welcome back to our seventh exciting season of Hooping Idol! The award winning contest is leading us all on our ever spinning search for the next great hooper star – and if you’re just tuning in, here’s what you’ve missed. We put out the intiial Casting Call and introduced you to our 21 contestants for season 7. They got things started off with Super Seventies Week and then 6 were eliminated. The remaining 15 got gothic for Goth Week and then 5 more were eliminated. Which brought us to Sinatra Week and thanks to a tie only 2 left the mix. Then we ventured somewhere magical for Fantasy Week and 3 more were eliminated.

Today our remaining five finalists arrive at Hooping Idol’s big moment – Performance Week. All five are spinning up a performance to an audience of at least ten people to the exact same soundtrack and sharing a single-shot unedited video of their performance, just as if we were in attendance sitting in a front row seat. The challenge: performing in front of real live human beings, not just in front of their video camera.

Hooping Idol 7 Performance Week

Those that hoop professionally know you don’t always have control over what music you’ll be performing to as well. Whatever sounds you’re given, you have to make it work and to bring that extra reality spin to the competition, our contestants will all be hooping to a short clip by the legendary Sunshine Jones of Dubtribe Sound System. For those that may not have heard, Sunshine is spinning up a once in a lifetime hoopjam for us at Hoopcamp 2017, the hooping event of the year! He’ll be doing a live analog performance during the celestial event of the year, a total solar eclipse on closing day and we’re psyched to have him at camp and as our guest judge for this week too.

Sunshine says, “First, let me begin by saying thank you. What a wonderful surprise, and such a pleasure it is to be the soundtrack for this competition. I am so impressed and inspired by how amazing each one of you are, and how complex and fantastic your hooping is. I know my song isn’t immediately an easy song to choreograph or perform to. I really appreciate everyone’s talent and courage and beauty. It means so much to me. If I could I would give everyone full marks and bring you all with me, absolutely everywhere I go.”

Hooping Idol is, of course, not only a competition. It’s a golden opportunity to learn and grow along the way thanks to the guidance of our incredible panel of international hooping star celebrity judges. They know first hand what being a hooping star is all about. So who is seated at the judge’s table for season 7? Allow us to introduce you to:

ANAH REICHENBACH

Anah Anah Reichenbach (FB, YouTube & @therealhoopalicious) of Hoop Revolution returns to the judge’s table for Hooping Idol 7! Anah, aka Hoopalicious™, is highly regarded as the founder of the modern art of hoop dance and a pioneer of the hooping movement. Over the past 19 years she has traveled the world teaching and performing both live and in commercials for the likes of Cirque du Soleil, Nike, Coke, Warner Bros, as well as spinning up support for Sting, Justin Timberlake, Fergie and The MTV Video Music Awards. She’s even appeared on America’s Got Talent. The Hoop Revolution™ Curriculum she developed has been the foundation of most other well-known hoop dance curriculums out there. The protagonist in the hoop dance documentary The Hooping Life and featured in countless publications from Vanity Fair to the Los Angeles Times, Anah is truly a hooper who knows what it is all about. She’s also won Hoopie Awards for Instructor of the Year, Video of the Year and was our first inductee into the Hooper Hall of Fame. She’s also the leader of implementing eco-friendly hooping practices too, Anah’s also the co-inventor and creator of the world’s first Eco Hoop. She’s based out of Los Angeles, California, USA.

LISA LOTTIE

Lisa Lottie Hooping Idol 6 judge Lisa Lottie (Website, YouTube, FB & @lisa_lottie) has been hooping since 2006 and has a legion of fans around the world who hang on her every spin. Originally from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Lisa spends most of the year traveling the world with her hula hoop street and stage shows. Having started her career performing in a traditional circus in Mumbai, India, she’s since developed her skills and style throughout the multi-faceted performance industry. She’s performed in over 30 countries along the way, studied at the Brazilian National circus school and holds a degree in circus from The Circus Space in London. And yet, she’s known best in the hooping world for her million-hit hooping videos on YouTube and her signature multi-hooping dance style. The multi Hoopie Award winning spinstress and Hooper Hall of Fame Inductee told us, “I am SUPER excited to be part of the judging team of Hooping Idol 7!” We’re SUPER excited to have her back this season too sharing her circus meets hoop dance spin on things. It’s going to be a good one! Lisa currently lives in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

BABZ ROBINSON

Babz Robinson Our third judge for our new season of Hooping Idol is the incomparable Babz Robinson (Website, YouTube, FB & @babzrobinson). Coming to us from the great northern lands of Canada where she has been spinning things up since 2003 – hooping’s first Canadian connection back in the day has always been the one teaching others. It wasn’t long before she was creating community and becoming the iconic original hooper on the platforms at Shambhala, Motion Notion and other festivals throughout Western Canada. The Hoopie Award winner for Instructor of the Year, Tutorial of the Year, Hooper of the Year Canada and Hooper Hall of Fame Inductee is a force to be reckoned with too. Her awesomely advanced, professional and incredibly helpful hooping tutorials, which she shares with the world for fun and for free, have made her a perennial favorite amongst hoopers the world over. If Babz is making something, you know it’s gonna be good. We’re so psyched to have her back sharing her Hooping Idol expertise for another season. She lives in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

LILA CHUPA-HOOPS

Lila Chupa-Hoops Lila Chupa-Hoops (Website, FB, YouTube & @lila_chupahoops) started hooping in 2010 and did her first stage performance only a few months later at Paris Decompression. Her international hooping journey really took off in 2012 when she was cast for our second season of Hooping Idol. Lila knows just what it takes to succeed on Idol too having stayed in the competition right through to the season finale. That’s when she quit her job at Notre-Dame de Paris too to become a full time hoop teacher and entertainer. “I found my hoopstyle in the pinup/vintage world and distinguished myself in a lot of european burlesque festivals showcasing one of a kind hooptease choreographies,” she told us. Aside from teaching and performing Lila also runs Rendez-v’HOOP, the hooping convention of France. She’s won Hoopie Awards for European Hooper of the Year, Doubles Hooper of the Year and Solo Performance of the Year too. She’s taught and performed all over the world and we’re excited to have her back – this time at the judge’s table.

Special Guest Judge: SUNSHINE JONES

Sunshine Jones The man behind Dubtribe Sound System, Treehouse Muzique, King Street Sounds, Cosmic Disco and Sunday Soul has been producing some truly delicious house music for years. The creator of our Performance Week soundtrack spent the 1990’s traveling the world with Moonbeam Jones and they distinguished themselves as performers rather than replaying their recordings, often bringing their own sound, lights, and traveling family with them. But unlike Dubtribe’s few North American counterparts, they departed from the warehouse movement to establish themselves as a grass-roots tour de force, refusing help, press, or money from any outside interests. Loop’s 9 year anniversary in Tokyo made for a fantastic beginning for Sunshine’s solo work too, and he’s been singularly blowing our minds as well ever since. He’s also been challenging what dance music is using musical force, live vocals, loops and effects to take us somewhere deeper, greater and very special.

Hooping Idol Host & Mentor: PHILO HAGEN

Philo Hagen Our Hooping Idol 7 Contestants also have a whole lot of extra assistance and inspiration this season from Host & Mentor Philo Hagen (FB, YouTube & @philohagen). He’s in their corner behind the scenes all season long & will not be judging or scoring this year. As the Co-founder and Managing Editor of Hooping.org, Philo’s been busy spinning hoop dance up online and off since April of 2003. Ever since discovering hooping he’s been on a mission to spread hoop love all over the world. He’s co-founded hooping groups in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, performed internationally, and has taught well received and popular hooping classes at Hoopcamp and other large scale hooping events. From the New York Times to the Huffington Post he’s been leading a modern hooping revolution and has won two Hoopie Awards for Male Hooper of the Year and Video of the Year. Philo lives in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Hooping Idol 7 Performance Week

1. HOOPFUL V: BELMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Vanessa, you are adorable! I liked that you incorporated the truck in your performance. It gave you a little more of a stage like setting. I wish you had more variation in your facial expression and played to the crowd a little more though. I did really like that you hit some beats with your movements, that made me happy! I also think that you could have used the different elements in the song to add more pace variation. For example, when the lyrics came in you could have slowed down, then when you kicked it back up a notch it would have added some excitement. It’s important in performance to have a wave of speed, vibe and energy so that the audience stays with you! I really liked your hooping though, lots of good expressiveness in there this week.

LISA: Hey Vanessa! This is sweet! I really like your setup with the pink ice cream truck, it’s pretty hard to hoop on a rug on the grass, so I commend you for that! The thing I love the most about your performance is the endless amount of amazing coin flipping you do, they just look so divine, it seems you have like a hundred variations and each one just boggles my mind. The tricks POP off my screen with those beautiful bright pink hoops too. Damn girl, you’ve got skills! The thing you really have to look out for when you are performing for people is to not turn your back on them, ever. So when you are doing the overhead weave you are looking out in the distance, we cannot see your face and the trick is repetitive, so it just distracts us and makes us think of something else. What you could have done here is to turn your back, finish the weave, and then turned your face to the audience right after you’d finished. A moment of pause for you to flash the audience with your pretty face would have made them clap and cheer instantly! So remember that – if you *must* turn your back, make it worth while!! Also, I would have liked to see you do a small stack or something in the end instead of just spinning four hoops on your waist. It just wasnt enough to make for a totally wow finish for me. I commend you for your great use of the track and really showing me the music in your moves, especially in the first minute!

BABZ: I like the beginning here with your use of levels with the music and your giant smile! You kept great eye contact and your infectious smile kept me grinning the whole time, which is really valuable in a performance. You also had some nice doubles stuff, but given the others abilities with multiples this might hurt you this week. A better planned out finale would be an asset to your performance as well. Good thing you’re so fun to watch and seem to be really enjoying yourself – and that is key to a good performance.

LILA: Congratulations on your performance! You carefully chose your background, set, outfit, hoops colors and brought your best smile fo us! I really liked how you choreographed with the music in the beginning and followed the beat with most of your moves. The single hoop part was entertaining, loved your stances and poses til your fingertips. With the twins, I can see your left hand is weaker. If you turn on the other side with your right hand towards the audience, you can make up for that weakness and show your best side. 🙂

2. POCKET MONSTER: LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Nikki, I loved your flow here! I do wish you had varied your tempo and expressiveness in the song though. There is a moment in the middle when the lyrics came in that was a perfect opportunity to slow down and work your character a little. You allllmost went there, but not quite. Also, I loved that we could hear your audience! I kind of wish you had jazzed up your outfit a bit more. For performance you want to make it extra special 😉.

LISA: Hey Pocket, I thought this was really great! I wanted to get up and dance with you! I love the speed you use, lightening speed! It’s perfect for this track and your visuals are helping me to really feel the music. There is just so many great tricks in here, most of all you had me mesmerised with your doubles sequence, I want to learn so many of those moves! I think you are showing a wonderful display of musicality through sick hula hoop skills and I can tell you are completely in your element. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s a great beginning to what could be a really beautiful act, perhaps you could add some multiple moves, balances and/or an LED element in there for maximum wow factor!

BABZ: Gaaaaaaad! You are so much fun to watch!! You pack so much energy in here and you even manage to sneak some funk into your movement! Good work on the sneaky transition to your doubles. Love your clean confident movement and the clean lines you create with your body. This combined with excellent second nature control of the hoops and the maintaining of that killer smile makes this video my favourite of the week. I can see you utilizing levels even more within your routine and the only place you broke eye contact to look down at your hoops was for your breaks, so maybe that could be worked on, but way to keep kicking ass!

LILA: Great performance from start to end! You had an entrance and an ending, I really appreciated that you worked on different levels and overall had high energy! Your smile in the beginning set the tone and you played nicely with accents on the music. I felt like the twin part was less structured and a bit rushed, but there wasn’t a lot of time to put so many tricks in anyway. Great lines with your arms and legs, the only thing that was distracting was the lot of small steps instead of having more controlled postures.

SUNSHINE: Excellent video, I really appreciated the tuning in to the subtle changes in the music. I felt really connected and loved the playful smiles, and delicate changes all at once. Kind of the best of everything together.

3. CALLUM BAKER: BRISTOL, ENGLAND, UK. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Callum, I wish you had brought some of the theatricality you are so good at (so present in your other videos), as I would have liked more costuming and more character. Especially because we all know how good you are at that! I kind of wish you hadn’t been so far away as well. Your hooping is flawless as ever, I would have liked more of the moodiness of the song to be reflected in your movements and dance though. I REALLY liked that you hit the beat on many of your juggling sequences. Awesome ☺
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 9
Overall Video Presentation: 8
Total Score: 26

LISA: Hey Callum! It’s easy to tell where you’re the most comfortable, it’s where I would absolutely be sh**ting myself! All your juggling is *so* flawless! I feel like you’re struggling in the beginning of the act with the use of the music in your hooping, but as soon as you get three hoops up in the air you are completely in your element and it’s so beautiful to watch. Here are my tips for you: it’s good to step out of your comfort zone and I love the use of on body hooping as an intro to the more manipulationy stuff, but if you’re gonna do it, do it to the music and let your body hear it! I want you to learn how to bend your knees too, it would be really worth it if you get yourself to a beginners contemporary dance class once a week, it will teach you how to play with the space in the room, levels, and most of all how to bend your knees. I would have loved to see you move around the room more for the duration of this act, you have lots of space so use it!

BABZ: Really enjoyed the strong beginning and how you were moving the hoop to the music and I feel like we got to see some fresh stuff again from you this week which is always fun. I know you must be sick of my comments by now and you can probably guess what I’m going to say. I am sincerely looking forwards to the day that you’re personality can shine through into your movement, which is really hard with juggling — which for me is not hoop dance. Your video was more of a juggling performance with a touch of hooping added in, as apposed to a hooping performance with juggling. And I know you were going for a dramatic ending with the whole crouching down thing, but then it just ends up being awkward when you just stand back up 2 seconds later. I’m wondering if you have a freak flag – if so I’d love to see it start flying 🙂

LILA: I’m glad your beard is growing back! It is very interesting because we can’t really compare your performance with the other contestants since it is mainly juggling. I don’t know so much about juggling, but I could see that all the sequences were different and well placed on the music. I liked the fact you added some flourishes in between each sequence with also body movement to break from the stiffness when juggling too.

4. SYDNEY HANNON: TIGRE, ARGENTINA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sydney, I liked your outfit and that it appears that you choreographed your performance! I also gives extra points for playing it off well when you fell out of your headstand 😉. I know, I am giving this feedback to everybody it seems, but there was a dreamy moment in the middle when the lyrics come in that would have been nice to use in your choreo for contrast. Whenever there is a spot to slow down for a minute, it makes things more exciting when you jump back in with energy! Also, I have to mention that your favorite ending finale is very familiar. You might want to consider finding something signature of your own for even more wow factor, something no one else is doing exactly like YOU that can be your calling card as a performer!
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 8
Overall Video Presentation: 8
Total Score: 25

LISA: Hey Sydney! Wow your performance most definitely packed a punch this week! What a great use of the track. Your moves are powerful and super accentuated and your build up of hoops over the act is sublime. Great stuff! A couple of things though, when you put in a difficult balance like a needle scale (0.28) you *must* take your time and not rush through it, these kinds of moves are super hard to get right on stage and nerves never help, but you are so much better off taking an extra breath and really using your arms to pull that leg up while you stabilise – it’s really uncomfortable to watch someone stumble on stage. I know you know how to do it though because that 4 hoop box is BANG on! One more little detail is the simple fact that your two dark hoops disappear against the green curtain in the background, this is a real shame as it makes me squint my eyes to see them! it’s a simple mistake but it’s made almost every week in this competition by someone. A little word about your final sequence, I recognise this as Lila Chupa Hoop’s sequence. I know it’s easy to be so inspired by someone and to copy their badass moves, but remember that a trick that you can learn isn’t the same as repeating a whole number of them in a row, in the same order as someone else. There are lots of things you could have done here to create a similar effect without the copy, so remember that. Forget you did this and create something that has come from YOU! It will feel so much better to perform it. 🙂
Theme: 8
Skills/Flow: 8.5
Overall Video Presentation: 7

BABZ: Somehow this week your performance came off as a bit rushed, like you had a regular routine that you do but you crammed it all into a shorter song. But then, if I had an actual routine, I would probably do the exact same thing. Happy to see that you are smiling and making eye contact with your audience, but it’s not coming off as natural and confident. You seam a bit uneasy for some reason. Love that thing you do with stopping your three hoops at 1:45 and you had by far the most dramatic finish out of all the videos this week, which of course is crucial for a solid performance.
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 8.5
Overall Video Presentation: 8.5

LILA: I can’t imagine how hard it is to go from 1 to 4 hoops in only 2 minutes of time! You have to pick carefully the tricks in that case. I would say it felt a bit rushed sometimes, and with acrobatic tricks you need more time to make them clean. I think my favourite part was the twins with smooth transitions. I have always loved your beautiful smile and you share it with your audience all the time! About the “finale”, it is a bit tricky because it pulls an emotional string inside me. That combo is the fruit of a creative process in my performance life and what I can wish you from the bottom of my heart is that you find your own wow factor moves for your next performances and videos. Other than that, you’re on the right track!

5. SHARKBAIT: LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sarah, I loved your use of dance form to uplevel the quality of your performance! Like everyone this week, I wish you had made use of the dreamy bit in the middle of the song to add contrast with perhaps some slower moments. Adding levels of speed and vibe throughout your performance adds depth and excitement – and keeps the audience’s attention ☺. I loved your continuous escalators as usual – Awesome! Really great three hoop sequence to finish too. I wish there had been more of an ending that fit the song though. I liked that you had someone to toss your hoops back to you from off stage. I wish I had thought of that. Ha!

LISA: Hey Sharkie! First up: nice shoes! I think you’ve done a great job this week! I love to watch you smile and be maybe a little bit shy, but obviously very happy to be on that stage! That opening sequence where you lunge and then slide down into the splits is so beautiful, and I love how you pick up the pace after that kicking into the music. My favourite thing by far about this video is your use of three hoops, if you’re not juggling with them it can be super hard to figure out how to use that number, but you have it completely worked out. Those transitions are flawless and super interesting, I have never seen a lot of those before, so I hugely commend you on that! Two things I would have liked to have seen. 1. a big massive final bow from you as it was a little unclear where you finished and you just ended up shuffling off the stage a little bit, and 2: a pan shot of your audience! I could hear them, but not see them! Great work from you.
Theme: 8
Skills/Flow: 8.5
Overall Video Presentation: 8.5
Total Score: 25

BABZ: A stronger beginning would be nice as it’s a bit awkward with you just standing there waiting for the music because, of course, a performance begins the moment you walk on stage. I think to go head to head with everyones videos this week your movement needed to be cleaner and more precise, but you had some great dramatic movements and created some nice shapes. I really liked your use of levels this week too. And I must give you kudos on your seamless recovery!
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 8.5
Overall Video Presentation: 8
Total Score: 25.5

LILA: I think this one was my favourite of the week! I love how all your moves were controlled and grounded. I have really been enjoying slow flow lately, giving more time to work on your poses and body movements even though there is less time to showcase tricks. Everything is well linked and looked effortless, even when you drop your hoop! I wish it could be a boomerang everytime for me too!! I felt the 3 hoops combo on the legs was a bit long, maybe doing it 2 times only instead of 3? Thank you for this beautiful submission!
