Hooping Idol 7 Fantasy Week: Let’s Get Fantastic!

Welcome back to our seventh exciting season of Hooping Idol! Our award winning contest is leading us all on an ever spinning search for the next great hooper star and if you’re just tuning in, here’s what you’ve missed so far. We put out the Casting Call and introduced you to our 21 contestants for season 7. They got things started off with Super Seventies Week and then 6 were eliminated. The remaining 15 spun it darker for Goth Week and then 5 more were eliminated. Which brought us to Sinatra Week and thanks to a tie only 2 left the mix instead of 3.

For their fourth challenge our remaining eight finalists were to spin up something fantastic for Fantasy Week. We want our idols to become true heroes and heroines of their hooping lives and to spin up something that goes beyond what we’d expect in our every day world. Fantasy is the stuff of fables, fairy tales and legends and it’s time for our Idol contenders to get legendary! They were schooled again on our Ten Easy Ways to Improve Your Hooping Video, and were told to make it count because in the end, three more would be going home.

Hooping Idol is not only a competition, it’s also a golden opportunity to learn and grow along the way thanks to the guidance of our incredible panel of international hooping star celebrity judges. They know first hand what being a hooping star is all about. So who is seated at the judge’s table for season 7? Allow us to introduce you to:

Lila knows just what it takes to succeed on Idol too having stayed in the competition right through to the season finale. That’s when she quit her job at Notre-Dame de Paris too to become a full time hoop teacher and entertainer. “I found my hoopstyle in the pinup/vintage world and distinguished myself in a lot of european burlesque festivals showcasing one of a kind hooptease choreographies,” she told us. Aside from teaching and performing Lila also runs Rendez-v’HOOP, the hooping convention of France. She’s won Hoopie Awards for European Hooper of the Year, Doubles Hooper of the Year and Solo Performance of the Year too. Hooping Idol 7 Fantasy Week

1. CALLUM BAKER: BRISTOL, ENGLAND, UK. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Yay! As a die hard old school Zelda fan, I love this video! Great job with the Zelda theme remix and I loved the campy fight scenes J Way to up-level the hoop juggling game by combining some balance and rolls in there. Spot on for sure! I especially enjoyed princess Zelda getting annoyed that you were taking so long. So cute and funny! Where was this location? Stunning!

LISA: Hey Callum! Brief=NAILED. I loved Zelda growing up and this was just everything, a clever idea, a thorough storyline, I just wish you had some chickens in there too! haha. I just love your body rolls and you really stepped it up again this week. I can’t believe you can do three over the shoulders while balancing one on your face! Absolute witchcraft! Seeing you hoop makes me want to get up and geek out and lock myself in a room to finally nail some of those buggers. Will you teach me when I come to Bristol sometime? The only negative criticism I have about your video this week is that those green hoops fade away in the forest. Freeze frame 0.27 and I can’t really see where the hoop is! You would have been better off changing it for a different colour there. For the rest I have little to fault, great story, great buildup of moves into a spectacular finale. Epic work.

BABZ: I really loved the way you worked all your hoops in with your Zelda game theme! It worked so well! And I had to laugh out loud how your princess is getting irritated by you taking so long and meanwhile you keep getting distracted by all the hoops. What really helped your video this week against the others was that your story telling was clearer than nearly all of them, and your editing made sense. There seemed to be a big lack of dancing this week in the other videos so this also gives you an edge competitively. If you are going to be performing for work I might suggest some drama and dance classes to help you with your musicality and expression through movement, I think it would really help give you a better stage presence.

LILA: Best video for me this week, LOVED IT! I love how you take all the themes so seriously and work on every little detail! I was laughing the whole time, you getting distracted by the hoops… Lisa, I would have slapped his face harder!! I saw you added a few new tricks, like the 3 hoops rolls + balance, really cool to witness your progress throughout the weeks!

2. SHARKBAIT: LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: WooOOo! I loves the portal to another world effect! I think I would have had a different reaction to being transported to an arid desert though, like “crap!! How do get outta here??” The one-handed/two hoop transition at 1:27 was so fresh and beautiful! I am not sure I have ever seen that one before. Nice! I liked the general concept of your video, but I wish there had been a clearer link between why you were going through the portals and why you were hooping, like you could have had an antagonist that was chasing you through, ONE that you had to battle with the hoops, or maybe one special hoop that rolled away and you were trying to find it, etc. I think a little more story line development here would have taken this video further!

LISA: Hey Sharkie, I just LOVE the special effects in your video this week, they are humorous and adorable! I do think that I kind of failed to grasp what your character was meant to be though? I don’t think the costume helped you. I just am a little unsure of what your mission was in this video other than randomly teleporting to other worlds. It left me giggling, but confused. Trick wise, I absolutely love that sequence where you ‘flower’ the small hoops in the desert, that looks so beautiful and it’s clearly a huge strength for you! I do wish that you would have taken your skills further though, you kind of peaked in the desert for me and then it fizzled out a bit as your video focussed more on the special effects digitally that the ones created by you in real life.
Theme: 7.5
Skills/Flow: 6.5
Overall Video Presentation: 8.5
Total Score: 22.5

BABZ: Man I love that smile of yours! It brings so much to your videos and really makes lt look like you are enjoying yourself, which for the viewer is very important – otherwise it’s hard to invest in you as a character to watch. I loved that flower thing at 1:40 and you’ve got some really unique quad stuff. You had some really cool editing with the portals and the desert, but It was unclear in your story why things were happening and the ending besides ending up were you began left me wondering a bit. I really would have liked to see more flow with more dancing. I liked the music you chose and thought it worked well with your style.

LILA: That dune is so beautiful! That made a really good background for your video, lost in the desert. It was fun to have those little special effects with portals, but I felt that there wasn’t a real story. I truly admire your solid quads tech, it’s so hard sometimes to have flow with multiples and you do it with great success! Though for the next rounds, I think I want to see more diverse hooping.

3. HOOPFUL V: BELMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Hoopful V! I love the “transported to another world” theme! I do think there should have been some transition between being transported to being delighted. I don’t know about you but I think there might be some initial trepidation involved in finding oneself in another world by magic. I loved the streamer on the hoop, an overhead shot would have been lovely! I was confused by the costume changes and I felt like there should have been more clear “discovery” of the various elements (like the note from the rabbit or the key). I loved all the fantasy scenes, I just think it needed more knitting together! There were some “not quite there” moments in your two-hoop segment in the middle. Considering there are other people in this competition doing some of those moves flawlessly, I would have focused on the movements in your repertoire that are YOU and highlight your strong points. You are a beautiful and graceful dancer. If you focus more on that it can make you stand out!
Theme: 9

LISA: Hey, V! Wow and did you take me on a journey this week? Yes you did! Before I get all complimentary: 6 minutes?! Girl: no! There is just no need! I feel like you have really put a huge effort into your video this week and it most definitely pays off though. I love the hoops in the trees and the huge variety of different scenes you gave me. At 2.11 I really wish you would have tilted the camera up more so I could see all of the hoop, it just got cut off! You have some really spectacular moves here and I am particularly impressed with that rapid escalator down where you throw the hoop on one knee. So good! That doubles sequence at 4.40 is my favourite, I just love how you do those transitions! A great video from you this week, allbeit a bit long!
Theme: 9
Skills/Flow: 8
Overall Video Presentation: 9
Total Score: 26

BABZ: I can tell you were trying to tell a story here, but I couldn’t tell why things were happening and it seems all a bit disjointed. The scene with the ribbons in the sun was stunning, but then you cut to another scene and we have no idea how you got there. You have some amazing shots and I laughed my ass off at that epic inflatable flamingo you were getting pulled across the pond in, and I think I’m going to have to add that to my fantasy bucket list! I’m still craving more expression in your movements, which for me counts the most.
Theme: 8
Skills/Flow: 7
Overall Video Presentation: 7.5
Total Score: 22.5

LILA: I really liked the celtic vibes in your video, I love this tyoe of music actually and it fit perfectly with the green fields and stone house. I felt like I was in Ireland! It was a bit hard for me to follow the whole scenario, but liked that you created three or four different worlds, with real decoration and characters in each, that must have been a hard job doing all of this in 3 days! I do believe in and support hoop dreams too. I liked all the beautiful shapes you made with your body while leg hooping and some of the double sequences.

4. HULA HOOPING HANNAH: BURLINGTON, VERMONT, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Ooh! Who doesn’t love a hooping mermaid?? I wish the story line had been more cohesive. Like, you were a captured mermaid in a net and all of a sudden you are in a gold sparkly dress (fabulous btw) with legs? I know you reference it later, but I would have liked more of a transition there. That being said, I LOVE your dance segment at 1 minute in. Thank you for bringing the DANCE! I just love the energy of your hooping here. Definitely made me want to jump up and hoop with you! I so wish the story had the cohesiveness to match!

LISA: Ariels dream came true!! Look at those LEGS mermaid <3 Hannah, I think you have taken it to the next level with this video. I really love your interpretation of the theme and that you had a reason for every scene. I completely got you and you swept me away! I *love* watching you hoop! I’m so glad to see you incorporate all levels of the room and explore every single possibility that’s within your reach with that hoop. Your legs are so great, if you keep stretching them out you’ll be able to do all of those flexy moves even prettier in a few years. 5 split looking good, but the same advice for you as all of the other 5 splitters this week: Slow down those knees!! it’s really hard to get the rhythm over your whole body when your knees are going 90 miles an hour and the rest of the hoops at 60! I know it’s hard.. trust me I know!
Theme: 10
Skills/Flow: 9
Overall Video Presentation: 9

BABZ: Loved the intro to this! Really unique and well done, with the news comentary coming off as authentic and not cheesy. Hannah, thank god for your movement! I feel like this weeks theme made it hard for people to connect with their music and ironically the music in your final video is not what you had edited to, but still, your movement with your body and hoop is so amazing and engaging to watch. Last week I asked for more of your personality and I feel that you really gave it to us 🙂 I also enjoyed that this video is probably one of the more modern and artistic videos we’ve seen in 4 weeks. Although the background you had to work with could have used a lot of something more, and this is where you lost points for me. I think you could have made more use of the extra video lay over that you had in there around the 1:26 mark. Perhaps you were worried it would be too distracting? I enjoyed the underwater shots towards the end, but I really would have liked to have had more of a conclusive ending to a video that was so great.

LILA: When I saw the mermaid picture I was so excited! To be honest, I thought there would be more mermaid hooping, but that story was interesting too. I really enjoyed your costume and all the flexi foot hooping. Your legs are definitely the highlight here, they become crazy when they are not hidden in your tail! I felt like the cuts were coming super fast and it was harder to get into your flow this week. I feel like you always have something new to show us, thank you !

5. KITTYHOOP: TOULOUSE, FRANCE. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Kittyhoop! What a cute theme 😉 I liked when the fairy godmother sneezed and turned you into a pokemon J. I wish there had been just a touch more back story. Like, why were you sad? And why and where were you going with all the transformations? To win back your prince (or princess)? To save the queen (or king)? Was the fairy god mother your friend or foe? We see the cute boy transform you from a frog at the end, but who was he and did you already know eachother? SO many questions! Just kind of confused about the story, as cute as it was I would have liked a little more hooping in here too in a way that was cohesive in the story. I know at this point in the game, its easy to get overwhelmed with all the options for the video and forget about the hooping portions and how they fit in. I would have thought about how the hoop played into the story line too so that you would have had more direction with how and when to hoop.

LISA: Hey Kitty, LOL for Spongebob! Also: look at the 5 split! It’s not perfect, but I really appreciate you putting it in! That hoop on the knee needs to go slower, many hours of drilling ahead for you, but this is hard stuff so it requires furious practise, nice work! I like your choice of song and my favourite bit was that part where you kicked in your breaks with the music, it showed some really nice musicality. For the rest though, I didn’t really get ‘fantasy’ from your video, more Cosplay, and those circular cross fades make me feel a bit ill, there is way too many of them! If there was a story from you I just didn’t really understand it, but I commend you for your always great sense of humour. I love that 3 split where you are lying on the floor too. 🙂

BABZ: I liked your upbeat song choice, but the story you were going for this week felt disjointed and confusing to me. Why were you crying? And then also upset at random times during your video like at 2:00? You have some great breaks, but I would like to see you clean up what your hands are doing on your vertical chest breaks. Unless they are supposed to be hooves? But then they were normal on the horizontal plane, so hard to tell. I think this week is starting to come down to people who have more experience flowing with their hoops and a cleaner more varied repertoire with their multi hooping which all just comes down to flight time.

6. DUREZZA: SANTIAGO, CHILE. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Durezza, I love the Alice in Wonderland spin off! I would have liked a little more intro though. Who was the person that picked up the hat and why? Why was Alice sitting there sad and alone? Where did the hoop come from? It just seemed like a lot of the scenes were kind of random. Your hooping as always, was mostly flawless and fabulous! The breaks scene at 2:40 was a bit sloppy, I would have shot that one again. I am sure it wasn’t easy in that coat though! Yeah, I hate to say it, but I think this one could have been better overall.

LISA: Hey Durezza, what a great video from you this week! I LOVE that you interpreted the fantasy theme into Alice in Wonderland! Your costume is absolutely incredible and the same goes for your friend, you look the part and you’ve truly taken me to wonderland. Maybe you could have gone for music that was a little bit more exciting? (like Gwen Stefani’s “What you waiting for”?!) I think that would have allowed you to just step it up in the choreograhy department. You both are executing great skills with the hoops and I would have loved to see that performed more to the music. I like how you went for something different this week and left out some of your ridiculously amazing signature moves, sometimes less is more and I know you are a great hooper! I commend you on the throw and the blind catch by the way, great stuff!

BABZ: I was so excited last week after seeing your amazing Sinatra week video, but somehow this week your movement and dance did not seem to connect very well to your Alice in Wonderland theme. Or perhaps the hat was throwing you off? I also think it’s best to keep the video focused on you as apposed to splitting the attention with having two hoopers. The story telling was as not as fluid as it could be, as I didn’t really know what was going on or why most of the time. I do love that you are still making lots of eye contact and smiling at the camera so we can connect to you though as an audience. So so so important!

7. POCKET MONSTER: LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK, USA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: OMG! The dress, so rad! I loved your energy through most of this video. So nice to see you let go and dance! I was a little confused about the beginning though. Like, why would someone randomly eat something from the ground, shiny or not? I think you could have had the goblin give it to her, or something? And the random costume addition of the cape was confusing too. The distorted sections were artistically interesting, but it obscured what your hoops were doing so I think it actually detracted from this instead of added. Perhaps if you had used it only a little? Yeah, I loved your passion and the settings, but a little more thought into the story and what you were trying to achieve here could have carried this further.

LISA: Hey Pocket! So I’m feeling really torn with this video. I’m not loving the slow mo rainbow scenes. They just don’t do anything for me. The only thing that really says ‘fantasy’ about this video to me is that gorgeous peach dress with the flower wreath, but in saying that, My god you look gorgeous! What I did get from this video however is raw, uncensored, and passionate hooping! I really *love* your use of your knees, it makes me buckle in mine! It’s really hard to let go on camera and you totally did. I think you are a fantastic hooper with some wild and beautiful moves. Ff you make it to next week *please* show me more of what I witnessed today between the 1:00 and 2:00 marks because that to me was pure magic!

BABZ: Are you tripping out on magic beans? I can’t quite tell why things are happening sometimes. I loved watching you rock out and you certainly had the best single hoop flow I saw this week with lots of emotion coming out through your movement, and it really seamed to go well with your music choice. I did find the Choppy rainbow scenes like the one at 2:45 hard to watch and I thought they took away rather than added to your video.

8. SYDNEY HANNON: TIGRE, ARGENTINA. Not viewable where you live? Try it on Vimeo.

ANAH: Sydney! This is so sweet and had a mostly easy to follow story. Awesome! I would have liked more story around how the evil witch (?) turned you dark though. I loved the hoop toss at 1:14, super smooth and unexpected J. I really loved the interplay between the two characters, I just wish we knew a little more about the why’s and how’s of the back story. You could have used just a few clips to show this and it would have all fit together better. Overall I enjoyed it though!

LISA: Hey Sydney! Wow I am so impressed that that ball of hula hoops didn’t collapse while you rolled it over the ground, that looked really cool! I think your opening scene with doubles is so beautiful and skilled, but WHY O WHY didn’t you use hoops with a more contrasted colour?? They completely disappear into the forest and it’s really frustrating cause it’s a mistake we see over and over in Hooping Idol and for some reason people keep making it. That palm spin at 2.44 is Pure Perfection and I like your story and your use of the theme, but I feel like you’ve done yourself such a huge no by having your coolest move disappear into the contrast of the forest for the majority of the video. It’s sad and frustrating!

It seams to be incredibly hard for people to convey emotion and dance through multiples and I’m so happy you can prove it can be done! Your story telling in your video was also by far the best with a beginning, a middle and an end and I was actually invested in your character and what was happening to her. I loved that she was enjoying herself and her transformation to the dark side until she saw a glimpse of her former self. So great emotional hooping + great story telling and edits and setting + a great length of video with out any overacting = so much winning! Really think you killed it this week Sydney!

LILA: I’m glad you came back on the fairy side! I love how you always come with amazing costumes, hair styles and make up looks! The hooping was a little bit secondary, but I saw some nice things… like the leg lift? awesome! Thank you for bringing great concepts of videos each time.
