Hooping Idol 6 Season Finale!

Hooping Idol 6 Finale

Hooping Idol 6 Season Finale!

It’s our super exciting Hooping Idol 6 Season Finale!!! Our final three finalists are giving it all they’ve got for their final hooping video of the competition – and this one was entirely up to them. After all, if they are going for the title and a shot at winning our Hooping Idol 6 Ultimate Prize Package, they should be doing so entirely on their own inspiration – and with a race this tight, any one of them could win it! The hooper that delivers the total package at this final stage in our search for the next great hooper star will become our new Hooping Idol and spin away with all of it. We couldn’t be more proud of all three of them too.

Things kicked off with our initial casting call. We then introduced you to our 21 contestants for season 6. For week one our finalists all spun up something groovy for Sixties Week. After the judges scores and the public vote 6 were eliminated. Then the remaining 15 all hit the clubs for EDM Week and in the end 5 more were sent home. We threw everybody a curve ball for week three, Opera Week, and 3 more were sent home. Things got scary for week 4 when our remaining seven spun up something spooky for Horror Week and 2 more were eliminated. Last week our final five all spun up exciting performances for Performance Week, all to the exact same song – and two more were eliminated. Who will be our next Hooping Idol? We’ll be finding that out soon enough.

Hooping Idol may be a pretty crazy contest, but it’s also a golden opportunity to learn and grow along the way thanks to the guidance of our incredible panel of international hooping star celebrity judges. They know first hand what being a hooping star is all about and seated at the judge’s table all season long we’ve had:

ANAH REICHENBACH

Anah Anah Reichenbach of Hoop Revolution returns to the judge’s table for Hooping Idol 6! Anah, aka Hoopalicious™, is highly regarded as the founder of the modern art of hoop dance and a pioneer of the hooping movement. Over the past 18 years she has traveled the world teaching and performing both live and in commercials for the likes of Cirque du Soleil, Nike, Coke, Warner Bros, as well as spinning up support for Sting, Justin Timberlake, Fergie and The MTV Video Music Awards. She’s even appeared on America’s Got Talent. The Hoop Revolution™ Curriculum she developed has been the foundation of most other well-known hoop dance curriculums out there. The protagonist in the hoop dance documentary The Hooping Life and featured in countless publications from Vanity Fair to the Los Angeles Times, Anah is truly a hooper who knows what it is all about. She’s also won Hoopie Awards for Instructor of the Year, Video of the Year and was our first inductee into the Hooper Hall of Fame. LISA LOTTIE

Lisa Lottie Hooping Idol 6 judge Lisa Lottie has been hooping since 2006 and has a legion of fans around the world who hang on her every spin. Originally from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Lisa spends most of the year traveling the world with her hula hoop street and stage shows. Having started her career performing in a traditional circus in Mumbai, India, she’s since developed her skills and style throughout the multi-faceted performance industry. She’s performed in over 30 countries along the way, studied at the Brazilian National circus school and holds a degree in circus from The Circus Space in London. And yet, she’s known best in the hooping world for her million-hit hooping videos on YouTube and her signature multi-hooping dance style. The multi Hoopie Award winning spinstress and Hooper Hall of Fame Inductee told us, “I am SUPER excited to be part of the judging team of Hooping Idol 6!” We’re SUPER excited to have her back this season too sharing her circus meets hoop dance flavored spin on things. It’s going to be a good one! Lisa currently lives in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

NICK BROYD

NickBroyd Since winning the inaugural season of Hooping Idol 1 back in 2011, Hooping Idol 6 judge Nick Broyd of Nick Broyd Hoop has been bringing his unique vision of hooping to the UK, as well as throughout Europe and overseas as well. Well known for his relaxed street style of hooping, Nick knows more than anyone the benefits that being on Hooping Idol can bring to our contestants. Using it as a launch pad, he has since taught and performed at countless hooping, circus and dance festivals all over the world. He’s appeared on national UK television on ITV’s Loose Women, and topped it all off by winning the 2015 Hoopie Award for Male Hooper of the Year. With a number of acclaimed videos and a solid following online, Nick understands the demands and requirements of making good hooping videos to show the world just what you’ve got. He also really knows just what it takes to win Hooping Idol. He’s done it himself! Nick’s currently one of the many who are making a living from hooping and he’s delighted to be back as a judge this year. He’s really looking forward to seeing all the new talent out there. Nick is coming to us from Bristol, England, UK.

BUNNY HOOP STAR

bunnyhoopstar Also back at the judge’s table this season is the one and only Bunny Hoop Star. Bunny is the founding owner and creative director of Australia’s first hula hoop business – her Sydney based Hoop Empire – established way back in 2005. She is also the founding creative director, writer and coordinator of Hoop Kids – a dedicated hula hoop program for kids and the adults who wish to teach them. Having introduced the international “hoop dance” community to Australia, Bunny’s circular mission has been to encourage and guide kids of all ages, skill and size to rediscover the lost art of movement and play in and beyond the hoop. She has appeared on numerous Australian TV programs, in web series, has had numerous Hoopie Award nominations, and is well known for her intergalactic activities both in and out of the hoop. Sourcing much of her cosmic information from both the stars and Galactic Mayan cosmology, she spins wheels within wheels in the name of multidimensional art and universal travel. There’s nobody quite like Bunny Hoop Star and she’s coming to us from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

PHILO HAGEN

Philo Hagen Our Hooping Idol 6 Contestants also have a whole lot of extra assistance and inspiration this season from Host & Mentor Philo Hagen. He’s in their corner again this year and he will be sharing mentoring advice publicly and behind the scenes all season long. He will not be judging or scoring our contestant videos though. As the Co-founder and Managing Editor of Hooping.org, Philo’s been busy spinning hoop dance up online and off since April of 2003. Ever since discovering hooping on a starry night in the redwoods he’s been on a mission to spread the hoop love all over the world. He’s co-founded hooping groups in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, performed internationally, and he’s taught well received and popular hooping classes at Hoopcamp and other large scale hooping events. Philo’s also appeared in and been interviewed by countless publications around the globe from the New York Times to the Huffington Post regarding the modern hooping revolution and more. The winner of two Hoopie Awards himself for Male Hooper of the Year and Video of the Year, when it comes to hooping videos he really knows what he’s talking about. Philo lives in Los Angeles, California, USA.

And we also have a few special guests at the judge’s table for our exciting Hooping Idol 6 Season Finale who all know just what it takes to win this thing, because all three of them have done it themselves.

Hannah Carter
Hannah Carter
Hooping Idol 2 winner Hannah Carter of Bristol, England, UK, spun her way to victory in our exciting second season and she has been having a blast hooping it up all over the UK ever since. Rumor has it she has a brand new hooping video coming out in a couple of weeks too. We’re super excited to see something new from Hannah and we’ll have it on hooping.org as soon as it’s finished.

Esmeralda Garcia
Esmeralda Garcia
Hooping Idol 4 winner Esmeralda Garcia of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, is an arts graduate specialized in theatre working within the circus arts, scenic makeup, and, most notably, acting. To a great extent her labor has been focused as the main promoter of the hooping and circus movements in her state. As a makeup artist she has worked for TV, theatres and cinema. She’s actually making her way through acting too, combining all of her abilities and making artistic tours across her country and continent. She’s truly a multidisciplinary performance artist.

Courtney Fagras
Courtney Fagras
Hooping Idol 5 winner Courtney Fagras is a hoop artist quite possibly of alien descent that is currently taking the summer to transit America’s West Coast. She will be teaching and performing on her travels too spreading her weird and innovative hoop style. She’s teaching workshops in Seattle, Washington, USA, on July 7th, and in Portland, Oregon, USA on July 12th – and she’s doing so with fellow Hooping Idol star and hooper extraordinaire, Benjamin Berry.

Our Hooping Idol 1 winner, Nick Broyd, has been with us all season long, and our Hooping Idol 3 winner, Maryève Gaudreau, was a guest judge for Horror Week since it was her idea to have it.

ANAH: I love the concept of this video! Really well done and great connection between your movements, your hooping, and the energy of your song. I especially liked the fire hooping scene and hooping on a horse (but then, I am biased in that regard… ha!). Your two hoop work is flawless as usual and I liked the addition of some more 3 dimensional moves in your sequences. Bravo!

LISA: Aw what a BEAUTIFUL finale video from you! You’ve been the picture perfect contestant through out this whole journey and I just loved how everything was brought together in this video. You are not only a fantastic hooper but also a great performer, you look relaxed and seem at home in front of an audience and in front of the camera – and you truly seem to love what you’re doing and know exactly why you’re there. Top it off with excellent videography like this and I think you have a very very good chance of winning this thing Ms FireFox! Some lovely and stunning tricks from you, highlights for me were the juggling, the firehoop bit where you lit the ground on fire (thats a huge compliment from me cause I can’t stand firehoops!) and most of all: THE HORSE TRICK. i mean, c’mon. a horse!!! If there is anything I want you to work on it’s on your legs and keeping those nice and straight so your lines get even longer, i know you can do it! (ballet, ballet, ballet!!) It’s been a joy to watch you XX

NICK: And what a way to finish! Like a trip down six weeks of hoop memory lane from you. You’ve covered all your tricks and techniques and in such a creative style. I’ve got to say, I loved the concept, really creative and plays so well in showing everyone, one last time, why you’ve made it this far. You’ve totally earned your place, yours being one of the videos I look out for each week. Delivery is, as ever, elegant and graceful, but with energy and pizazz and super clean on the technical side of execution. I thought the song choice really suited what you went for here. Its sumptuously filmed and edited. Big points to the editing team -that was a finale! You get better and better each week. Thanks so much for your efforts each week. Good luck!

BUNNY: FireFox that is a winning performance! Well done!!! I sure hope you are working as a pro hooper. If not, drop everything and GO THERE! You have got what it takes to entertain full time with the hoopla. I LOVE your final submission! I thought it was sweet that you wore the same costume as last week – it made me feel like you are on the road to developing a character that I hope to be seeing a whole lot more of. The shot with the horse was also a lovely echo from your previous show pony video and gave a sense of relaxed playfulness and familiarity. Again, like last week, I just can’t fault this performance – you just get better and better. The concept is super creative, the music is toe tapping gold, your timing is on, the scenes are gorgeous, it’s all so beautifully shot (well done hubby!), your expression and engagement with the camera is swoon worthy and your skills are off the charts – juggling hoops, cart wheels and foot hooping, fire domination with a balance nonetheless and your final scene with minis – LOVE! I give 10s because I believe in nailing a performance and that my dear is exactly what you do. If there is one piece of advice I would give in terms of taking it further, I suggest developing this character and working with mime – I think it would take you to a whole other level. GO FOR IT YOU SUPER STAR! ThanxXx for being so awesome.

HANNAH I love the concept of this video, I was always looking forward to where the next scene would take us. You have great control over all your moves and a great skill level of classic multi hoop mixed with fluid hoop dance. I was a little worried you may have used up all your tricks in your previous videos, but this still felt fresh and I was very excited to see the cartwheel foot pass which is such a great trick. My only criticism is that it feels a bit like you are always putting on a show. You have great performance skills, but I would have liked to see the real you a bit more too.

Felicidades.

In my view, the final video of the competition is with what we close this joyful cycle, and is like the last slice of a cake. I want to truthfully congratulate you, because i feel you finish up this task in an excellent way; first of all, a wonderful idea, with a very well development of the story, outstanding abilities and beautiful ending. Watching you play and how you share with your public or with the camera, is such a nice pleasure. Greetings.

COURTNEY Wow, great job! I love your concept and integration of your hoop skills throughout. Intriguing locations keep you engaged until the end. Which is adorable. What a cute little gardener, and the idea of passing the inspiration along. It is no doubt that you have mad hoop skills, and great performance poise. And look so cute in your outfit, and the horse! Slaying all the circus style hoop tricks. You show a lot of confidence and personality and I really like that. I love especially the cartwheel hoop pass and that fire ring. Congratulations on making it to the end, it’s so much work and you did a really great job with this captivating and well thought out finale! Good Luck!

PHILO: That was pretty epic. I loved how you used the time capsule and viewmaster to time travel us back to all these cool little moments from your season of Hooping Idol. I noticed you were wearing the same outfit at all of them too. Did you film little snippets for the finale throughout the season, or did you go back to them again for a second spin? I did feel just a little disconnected along the way which I attribute to little things like your distance from the camera, the sunglasses / not being able to see your eyes, but the whole concept was very effective from the moment the girl found the box in the garden, right through to your -spinning parasol thank you credits. It reminded me of all of the magic you’ve been spinning up all season long. You’ve really brought it from start to finish and you were smart to remind us of that fact – I’d forgotten about the party tend in the white sands. Some may feel a little been here and done these though, wishing you’d taken us somewhere new. I made a comment last week about things we’ve seen before too. That being said, the way you beautifully weaved all this together I’m really not sure anyone could find fault with it. A wonderful finale week video submission that truly felt like a finale. What a treat it’s been getting to watch you spin up Hooping Idol 6 this season and best of luck!

ANAH: What a cute concept! I liked that the hoop was leading you down the rabbit hole so to speak. I hope you were able to find all your hoops afterwards! There were some very good moments in here and I liked the build up to multi hoops. I would like to see more embodiment in dance through your hooping though.

LISA: First of all, that smile of yours when you look into the camera is just the best, it makes me feel so happy inside! I think this video is just SO SWEET. I love the concept and I love following you on your adventure, in the beginning I was all like: ‘man why hasn’t she made a bit more costume effort?’ -but then I got it! Totally, that flying hoop is also brilliant and I think that forest has never ever looked more beautiful! You are such a great hoop artist, I adore watching you and I love your music choice this week – I have a total weakness for tracks like that. Tricks wise: solid stuff but I know and YOU know that you can clean it up a bit, and I am talking about body positioning more than anything. I know thats really tough on a rough forest surface, but this is the finale and I am telling you how it is! Your body needs to look just as smooth as your hooping and there is work there than can be done. I also wish your video was more HD because I would have loved to see those forest shots a bit more clear. Thank you for making your amazing videos, it’s been so great to watch you!! XX

NICK: Of all the people I’ve watched over this competition I feel like you have improved the most over the course of it. Things have tightened up, right from the skills/flow aspect, down to the themes and presentation. There are still things to tighten further, for example, a few times some sharper edits would have smoothed certain sections out, and its a bit long, but overall you’ve grown as the show has run along. I’m really glad you’ve worked on the interaction with the camera so much. There’s great engagement with the camera now. I sensed some shyness at the start of this process but its much more confident now. All of your big tricks are on show one last time and they rock. The quads are your strongest point, its been a joy to watch you. And I am so glad you nailed a double chest roll. Its really awkward when people balls that up. Great finish, best of luck with the vote.

BUNNY: Beth Ann – did I see what you did there? Yes I did! Gorgeous! There are several things in this video that I love. First up – your smile. I’m not sure I’ve connected with you as much before this video but I just love that zoom in at 0.59 and all the following moments where I get to share your beauty and your smiling joy. I was smiling back! Secondly – how to work runaway hoops into your narrative! Follow that spinning hoop, that’s how. And what do we find along the way? The development of you as a hoop performer plus sparkles and fun things tucked into nature. What a sweet story. This is hooping. You really lifted my heart with this submission. Thank you! Loving the second hoop magical drop in! Very cool. You make magic in creating that colourful hoop world of yours in a sweet location. The one thing that I would love to see you develop more is your sequence of tricks. Being thrown straight into breaks and wedgies broke a little of the magic for me. You are ready to really interact with your hoop with movement narrative – by that I mean building your moves up, adding pauses and expression, interacting with your audience and considering how the moves themselves tell a story or convey a mood and flow with the music. I felt like your story and your hooping were at times somewhat disconnected. I would have also pumped the levels on your video a little more to boost the colours and light. Beyond that, I have just adored watching you grow with confidence and prowess throughout the competition. You are a really beautiful hooper! Thank you for all your sweet energy and fantastic submissions throughout the competition Beth Anne and congratulations on making the final. I am looking forward to seeing more of your hoop stardom to come!

I love how much your personality comes through and I can see how much you enjoy hooping too. Sometimes it seems like you are concentrating a little too much and forget about your audience, but in this video I feel you connected really well. Every time you smiled, I couldn’t help but smile back!

Felicidades.

When watching your video, i could feel your essence as a person and as a hooper. A truly natural flow of yours. It was wonderful to see so many hoops being part of the nature and of your own world too, which is what you create every time you play. In particular: the approach you gave to your video, seems to me very honest and creative. The flying hoop, the hulas flowing within the river and that final shot at the ending were some magical and beautiful images. Congrats!

COURTNEY What a magical adventure you took me on. If only every time your hoop rolled away it would end up in a hoop filled cave/river (with floating hoops down the river!). The movement of the hoop creates a movement that makes me curious what may happen next. You really shine in this video, so many big smiles! Serious hooping skills, like how you had a little bit of one, two and four hoops. And the four hoop section was legit, those long smears while hooping on arm were on point. Your flow goes really well in the video too, and your hard work shows, and I can only imagine how long it took to get your hoop palace set up, or just hiking with that many hoops. Congrats on making it to the end! You did so good, Good luck!

PHILO: That was super fun and left me feeling happy and in love with you for sharing it, and that’s just the kind of feeling you want to be bringing people for Finale Week so very nicely done. And ain’t it true that we can be surrounded by hoops but when that sparkly new one appears over there we just gotta have that too?! LOL. I just loved the hell out of this and sure, there were some things that could’ve been smoother, but all along the way you’ve been charting your own course with your ongoing storyline and keeping it super real and you and personable – like the best new hooping friend we all want to have. I have no doubt now that we’d have a blast hooping together and I think the community feels that way with you too. Even though you’ve been near the bottom of the judges scores in recent weeks you’re spinning up the finale and I think that’s why. My only real complaint was that mid shot cut and edit because we’ve talked about how to handle better splicing out a mistake earlier this season – but apart from that it seems mother nature decided to spin you into a beautiful hoopstress surrounded by a world of green and hoops galore. It just might be the golden ticket. Good luck Beth Anne! It’s been so much fun watching you all season long!

ANAH: Wowzers Tarryn! Really amazing all around! The filming was stellar, the editing was creative, your character work was engaging and your hooping was on point! I loved the relatable story of quitting your desk job to join the circus. SO hooptastic. LISA: Hey Tarryn, not the usual amazing-ness that I am used to from you this week… for the finale?? Honestly I was really only starting to feel it once you found the big top and danced your way into the sunset… I understand that before that you were ‘trying to find yourself’ with your job and your life, but I feel like that’s no excuse to not display the kind of kick ass hooping moves that I am used to from you. I appreciate that you’ve tried to put in variety, but it needs to be better than what I am used to cause you just made me wonder what you were doing! hmkay? That all being said, that tutu with leotard and tights combination is just EPIC. i LOVED that! I think the story was cute and the presentation

NICK: Wow, this is definitely a more left field video than your others. It had a slightly melancholy quality to it. Loved that! I liked the departure into something more unfamiliar from you, kudos for springing this. I also liked the turn to a more comedy edge, I can’t remember you doing that before. I have to say I did think it was a little slow to get going, I get that was partly thematic, but it just ran a little too long before you really engaged and went for it. Criticism aside, I loved the theme, its a really nice way to end. I also thought you hooping in character in the supermarket was some of the best hooping I’ve seen off you. The movement, musicality and character play there was outstanding. Its been an absolute pleasure, no doubt I’ll see you out there in the UK at some point. Fingers crossed for you!

BUNNY: Tarryn! Yes to quitting boring day jobs and creating your own circus! In my opinion, that’s what all hoopers should do simply because they can and the world needs as many of us as possible to bring the colour and joy that the hoop has to offer. I hope you are working the hoop professionally! Like all of your submissions throughout the competition, you set the mood up well with your story telling, characterisation, expression, costume and music choice. I got a little thrown by the office to supermarket transition – were you daydreaming? why were you in a supermarket? I watched a couple of times to try to find the connection but it wasn’t clear to me. In any case, the supermarket scene has some fine skills – floor slides, hoop bounces, movement narrative, character development. I would have moved the camera in a little closer to capture all that gold! My favourite part is 1.15 where you kill it with the floor work and really hit the music. I also really love all your body movements from 3.23 onwards – it’s a strong finish and showcases your ability to interpret the hoop with a creative and unique edge. I’ve enjoyed many of your videos throughout the competition. Thank you so much for all the wonderful work and sharing your talent. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of your hooping. Well done!!

COURTNEY Magnificent! That was really lovely. What a great story of breaking free to go follow your dreams and let go of control! Oh, I love the music you picked too. The simplicity in the beginning juxtaposed with the monotony of life was poignant and deeply hit my soul. The scenes in the aisle at the store has such an authentic feel and your movement is just so good, I really loved that part. And your sheer joy in the end, the cirque has finally made it to the freak show, or carnival in this exact reference! Your hooping is beautiful, loved that sequence of arm rolls in the middle. Lots of technical skill mixed with a lot of unique body movements. A super great video! You worked so hard I can tell! Congratulations making it all the way to end, it really is so much work and you did so amazing the whole way! Good luck!

PHILO: Tarryn, your finale week video totally speaks to a lot of hoopers out there, especially hoopers of all ages too, who have jobs that aren’t making them happy while they’re spinning joy inside their plastic circles. Smart move making something relatable on that level and one of the things I love about Finale Week is when someone brings something that surprises us and this really does that. Watching you at the end spinning the joy with that stunning sunset behind you is fantastic, a perfect note to end your Hooping Idol 6 journey on. I do think you took some risks with your song choice even, though it fit your mime speed and movement perfectly, and by going with a more stiff and “mimey” approach to your hooping and facial expressions, though we already know how gorgeous your flow and expressive you are too. It did feel a little disconnected in spots, like maybe not having a theme and parameters to reel your creativity in left you a hair lost, but you’ve spun up some stunning videos this season, have been bringing it every step of the way so I have nothing but applause for this. Good luck!
