Hoopie Awards 2016: Rock The Vote!

Welcome to Hoopie Awards 2016! Yes, Hooping.org’s 9th Annual Awards celebration honoring greatness in our hooping community is finally here and we’re delighted you’re here too. We’d like to remind everyone that if you’re a hooper you’re already a winner, whether you’re even nominated or not – each and every one of you! We really mean that! YAY!

This year submissions for Hoopie Award consideration were accepted beginning on Monday, January 11th, through Friday, January 15th. We compiled a list of these submissions, pre-screened them for content and manageability, then presented the remainder to our 2015 Hoopie Awards Academy Panelists. The panel this year consisted of 50 randomly selected hoopers, all of whom made themselves available to be of service to the community via their submissions. Panelists were then instructed to forget their personal affiliations, communities and countries and vote for their top five in each of our award categories. All of their votes were then painstakingly compiled and now we proudly present your 2016 Hoopie Award nominees.

There was a delay in presenting the awards this year when we ran into a glitch in our voting software. In order to make certain the awards remain as fair as possible, we scrapped the system and installed a new one. Trouble was we needed to learn the new system and then code everything all over again. This information was shared in our hooping community on Facebook and we apologize for the delay. Trust us though, it was necessary and well worth it.

Previous Hoopie Award winners were once again not eligible to be nominated in an award category previously won by them. And because we have a few nominees again this year who are on staff, the final electronic vote tallies will once again be validated by World Hoop Day organizer Hoopin’ Annie. World Hoop Day events were celebrated on six continents in 2015, raising funds to gift hoops to needy kids around the globe. We sincerely thank them for their assistance with the Hoopies again this year.

Hoopie Awards 2016 Changes

We added several new award categories this year and have one long standing award we will not be observing this year.

Hoop Love Ambassador of the Year. This new award was spun up to inspire greater hoop love among hoopers everywhere in our global hooping community by honoring those who are ambassadors of spreading it.

Uncut Performance Videos. The rise of smart phones and easy video editing options has raised concerns that uncut performances were being overlooked by the Hoopie. We added two new awards for unedited hooping performance videos, a solo video award and another for videos featuring 2 or more hoopers. These videos may include introductory or closing edited footage, but the actual hooping performance itself must be completely unedited from start to finish. Such performances may be filmed anywhere from the stage to your own backyard.

Geography Based Awards. As hooping continues to span the globe the time has come for increased global awards accessibility and recognition. Thus we added new Hooper of the Year awards in each of hooping.org’s ongoing geographic categories. These include Africa, Asia, Australia/NZ, Canada, Europe (Non-UK), Mexico/Central America, South America, UK and USA. All nominees must be presently living in the geographic awards area they’ve been nominated for.

Older Hooper Recognition. Last year we realized that while it’s great to honor a Youth Hooper of the Year, we were remiss in honoring our elder hoopers too. This year we added two new awards, one for Over 40 Hooper of the Year and one for Senior Hooper of the Year honoring hoopers 65 years of age or older.

Double Hooping Award. With such dynamic double hooping happening this year we decided it was time to honor a Doubles Hooper of the Year. Double hoopers may include those using minis, twins or larger hoops of any size.

Newbie Hooper of the Year. We are temporarily or possibly permanently saying farewell to the Newbie Hooper of the Year award. Submissions this year were required to include the month the hooper started in 2015 and a link to their YouTube or Vimeo page. Few followed these directions and our review panelists didn’t feel strongly about enough of these potential candidates to elicit an award this year.

And the 2016 Hoopie Award Nominees are…

First we present a simple list of all award categories and our nominees for 2016. All of our nominated photos, tutorials and videos this year include links that will open in new windows so you will not lose your place on the Hoopie Awards 2016 page. Please make use of these included links. They’re here to assist you in making educated voting decisions in the visual content award categories.

Secondly you will find our official voting ballot with all nominees and check boxes for you to cast your vote. You may vote for one selection in each of our award categories and you may cast only one ballot. You will have until 11:59 pm PST on Sunday, March 13th, to make your most thoughtful voting decisions. SORRY, VOTING HAS CLOSED FOR THE 2016 HOOPIE AWARDS

Hooping.org congratulates all of our nominees this year. We would also like to especially thank all of our Hoopie Awards 2016 Academy Panelists for their dedicated service in reviewing all of the award submissions this year. It’s a seriously major undertaking and it keeps the Hoopies a true hooping community awards process. Thank you

Your comments are welcome, although campaigning – even if it’s on behalf of one’s loved ones, is strongly discouraged. Good luck to you all and happy hooping!

  1. I feel a little confused about the “Solo Hooping Performance of the Year” category featuring some videos that are not performances? Idk, I guess if it just means hoop video in general maybe it should be renamed. But if it is not in front of an audience should it be considered a performance? Nothing against the videos, they are great.
