Last year we were all super excited and anxiously awaiting the announcement of who would be our new Hooping Idol. And it was Hannah Flett of Green Fairy Hoops of Exeter, England, UK, who spun her way to victory in our second season after dazzling us with her steady growth and progress week after week, taking us places by the end of the competition that few had even expected from her. With Casting Week auditions currently open for Hooping Idol 3, the biggest online hooping event of the year, we tracked Hannah down amidst the whirlwind that has become her life and got the skinny on what’s been up with her this past year and how being a Hooping Idol has all played out.
Hooping.org: So what was it like to actually win Hooping Idol?
Hannah: Incredible! Knowing people liked me for just being myself made me feel so good about who I am and the way I hoop, words cannot even describe it! It seems such a long time ago now. I remember getting up early before work to see the results show and just screaming with happiness! When I saw the compilation clips from all my videos too I felt so amazed and proud at what I had created in such a short time, and I realised my videos together represented me exactly how I see myself.
Hooping.org: That’s awesome! So what has your year been like?
Hannah: I’ve been doing private teaching and event performances, including a summer of festivals hooping with a local reggae band. For months and months after Hooping Idol I had so many people come up to me and congratulate me, including lots of people I didn’t know at all. I am truly amazed so many people took an interest in the competition. Beyond that I struggled with being a student and decided it was not for me. Now I have a full time job with the National Trust. It’s like the Royal Oak Foundation in the states, which I love, but it does take a lot of energy. I haven’t been able hoop as much as I would have liked and take it to the level I think I could have this year, but when I look back Hooping Idol stands out as being the best experience and achievement of my year.
Hooping.org: So Idol had an affect on your life then?
Hannah: Most definitely. It has given me so much more confidence. And my finale video getting nominated for a Hoopie Award was just such a great boost too. Every now and then I check my YouTube channel and see even more people have watched my videos, which is just wonderful and I wonder who they are and hope they are feeling positive and maybe even inspired to hoop themselves.
Hooping.org: Anything that you’re currently working on then?
Hannah: A new video! I have yet to do one since Hooping Idol and I am so excited to be creating a video again. I have also finally plucked up the courage to choreograph my own hoop routines, which is something I have always struggled to get to grips with in the past.
Hooping.org And we’ll be featuring it as soon as it’s finished! What advice do you have for this year’s would be Idol contestants then?
Hannah: As much as I was delighted to win, you learn so much about yourself in the process that every second is worth it no matter how far you get. You will make so many friends with the other contestants and with the voters too. The judges comments can be hard to take at times, but they will help you progress through the competition. You won’t agree with everything they say, but its good to challenge yourself and see how you come across to others. Just be yourself, enjoy yourself, be creative, be determined, put in more effort than you ever thought you could and always remember to smile.
Hooping.org: Thanks Hannah!
With two seasons of Hooping Idol and two winners in a row hailing from the UK, Hooping.org is eagerly anticipating our third season and seeing just what’s in store. The judges are excited, the prize package is amazing and it’s going to be an experience you won’t want to miss. Want to give Hooping Idol a spin yourself?
