Hooping Until the End of the World

It’s the end of the world as we know it, but I really do feel fine. Tomorrow, December 21, 2012, a cyclical calendar spun up by Mayan civilizations that dates back to 2000 BC comes to an end. Circles have been important for the history and foundation of so many religions and cultures and the Mayan civilization was one that also utilized this powerful and magical shape. A series of cyclical calendars were created by the Mayans, starting with the date on which they believe the earth to have been created, August 11th, 3114 BC. The final date on the Mayan cyclical calendar is tomorrow, Friday, December 21st, 2012. While some have suggested that the end of the world is imminent, many historians and experts have suggested, however, that what is actually signposted by the Mayans for tomorrow is a shift in our society – the dawn of a new age if you will!

“A new age?”, I hear you cry, “What does that mean?” Well, let me explain before you give up on me entirely. Tomorrow’s date is of particular importance as it is Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, at least for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and for the first time in 26,000 years the sun will be directly aligned along the plane of our galaxy. The Mayans predicted that this alignment would signal the time when our civilization would enter a new age. This new age is predicted to produce a shift in our society where we will let go of our “Western” way of life, one which can sadly be characterized by war, politics and a desire for material things. Letting go of these things will allow the human race to reach an era of understanding where there will be harmony, wisdom, all with a greater value being placed on our hearts and time with friends and family.

Sounds great right, but is it possible? While I can easily see why some people may argue that this will never happen in our day and age, I believe it is already is. Just look at our community!

The power of the hoop is enormous. In the past week we have all witnessed wonderful World Hoop Day celebrations around the globe. Our amazingly generous, understanding and inclusive hooping community is brought together through a shared love of the circle – a plastic circle, a plastic circle!! Our hoops bring joy to the young and old alike and can be shared with everyone. Not only can hooping physically benefit us, we have all felt the internal changes it can bring as well. So many have noted a greater sense of awareness and connection between our bodies and our minds, increased self-esteem, better health – mind and spirit benefits galore!

Regardless of whether or not you believe any of the Mayan predictions for tomorrow, embrace what this Friday, December 21st, 2012, is supposed to represent – a change in consciousness. I believe the hoop will become even more of a tool to facilitate change in the days ahead, in ourselves and in others. The Mayan Calendar, after all, is circular like our hoops and a circle can represent so much. Through sharing our hooping I truly believe we hold a key to a happier society. The shift the Mayans predicted is approaching and that is why tomorrow, when the world ends, I will be hooping in the dawn of a new age. I hope you will be too!
