When we first heard rumors that will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas was working on a new solo track called “Hoola Hoop” awhile back, we couldn’t quite believe it. Had hooping permeated the world again in the last ten years to the point that even a seven-time grammy award winner was finding himself inspired by the spin? We held our breath and decided to wait and see. Well now the wait is over because we’ve gotten our hands on a leaked copy of the brand new music video for the as yet unreleased single “Hoola Hoop”. We soon learned that the track features aka Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, aka Nicci Sundae, but our real question was whether or not the music video would feature any actual hoola hooping. Does it? Answer: No, it does not – but even though there isn’t a single hoop in the video, after listening to this we’re very confident that when the track does hit the airwaves next month (his new solo album has a release date of October 15th), it will only be a matter of time before the world will be listening, singing along and ultimately hooping it up for themselves.
The lyrics say, “Hey hoola girl won’t you go and get your twirl on, won’t you go and get your swirl on. Hey hoola girl shake it, shake it real hard, etc.” It’s not exactly rocket science, but as is often the case with the sounds will.i.am is associated with – the track is infectious. Add in the beautiful Dias de los Muertos imagery and some hooks that are sure not to leave anyone alone, and we can’t see the track going anywhere other than the top of the charts this Fall. And for those keeping score, yes that is Rye Rye’s “Shake It to the Ground” that is being sampled, just in case you were wondering. Check out this sneak peak of “Hoola Hoop” while you can. Parental Warning: Profanity.
where were all the hoops?
all the hoops are in the lyrics…. so you can hear it and use your imagination. ahhhh, funny though, right? nothing in the video?
I DO think we oughta come up with a new SCHWANG move. oh yeah!
This is clearly not will.i.am’s, y’know masterpiece, but I’m choosing to view it as an ode to “invisible hooping.” I don’t understand the handkerchiefs and the Urban Dictionary was not helpful (in the way I’d hoped) about defining “schwang” but I’m all over-30-and-shit. Somebody explain this to me.
where are the hoopers? or is this another line dancing thing… good song … not sure if he is talking about actual hula hoopers……???? confused…
Too bad they didn’t really use hoops. Then they might’ve actually looked sexy, instead of … well, robotic. Tried too hard and failed on the visuals and the animation of the masks. Need to just listen to his one.
Total fail! As a matter of fact, a bit insulting.
Well I’d say we need to make a collective version of the video and show them what they’re missing! (Duh: Hooping!)
(Also: Yay RYE RYE! <3 )
Takes me back to hoop camp last year when we had Luna doing a super fab hoop mime— with similar moves in the video.
Sometimes we do not need a hoop to hoop. We all know the moves, and if you are caught in an elevator, on an escalator, in a crowd and don’t have your hoop, nor room to hoop, you can still do the hoop moves cuz your body knows the groove.
work it yo.
Yeah Will, WTF??? At first I was excited then when I saw no hoopers, no hoops and the lyrics go so off topic I was just disappointed. On one hand I want to feel glad for the Hoop references/recognition but then the video just left me wanting more. More that depicts what hooping truly is. What group of Hoopers is he referring to? I dont know any hoopers like the type he is singing about. I dont think I can shake and hoop at the same time, can I? Hmmmm……I think Schwang is the dance move they are doing when he repeats that word. The video is just weird. It’s kind of embarrassing. I like Hannah’s suggestion above though. I’ll love to see what the Actual Hooping Community comes up with. I watched the video twice trying hard to find something positive to say about it. Blah, I can’t, sorry! I’m already trying to think of what I am going to say when all my non Hooping friend’s say, Hey did you hear that new song or see that new video….Ummmm, yeah but……
I’m thinking he used hoola hoop as the method in which the girls move their hips. The attempt at being seductive in their movements can be considered similar to the way one moves with their hoop.
