Light Painting with Your Hoop
Most hoopers love capturing the light trails of their LED hoops, but today we have a different kind of hoop photography. Dennis Calvert is a photographer in Cullman, Alabama, who specializes in light paintings that use no digital manipulation. He relies solely upon lighting and exposure. He created this eerily beautiful photograph using a hula hoop with el wire taped to it. He placed the hoop in front of the camera and then moved it about three feet away after triggering the flash and jumping. The entire exposure was only 14 seconds long. For all the nitty gritty photography details, check out his blog. Just imagine the kinds of light painting photographs he could create with an LED hoop! Now who wants to grab a hoop and give this technique a try?

For our 2012 new year cards, my husband and I did a light painting of a dragon using all my LED and glow props. I cobbled it together in Photoshop (adding text and a shot of the partially eclipsed moon) but the trails and shapes were all drawn freehand with the toys. It was really fun to try to get the right balance of movement and exposure!
