Katy Rendinaro Hoops Up SUNY Cortland
Katy Rendinaro is majoring in therapeutic recreation at the State University of New York Cortland and she’s become something of a poster child for the school. Her major, which uses recreational activities to help people with disabilities, allows her to do many of the things she loves in life while helping others, things like skiing, hiking, horseback riding — and hooping. After seeing people hoop dancing at a music festival during her freshmen year, she not only wanted to start spinning it up, she wanted to share the hoop love with everyone on campus. Katy recruited some friends, bought a bunch of tape and PVC pipe and they all started making custom-made hoops for the new Cortland Hoop Dance Club. Working with the Recreational Sports, the club debuted at a “Taste of the World” celebration on campus. Was it intimidating to launch her own club and introduce the campus to a whole new art form? “It was a little nerve-wracking,” Katy confesses. “But I was way more intimidated when I tried African Dance. I can’t shake like that.”
