A Social Experiment in Public Hooping

Free Lesson Sign Ayo had an idea for a cool social experiment in public hooping. Ayo writes, “Could I use signs to break down social barriers and bring happiness to strangers? Upon Yair’s encouragement, I created, colored and laminated four signs: 1) Join Me! 2) Free Lesson 3) Free Hugs 4) Let’s Talk! (About Something Interesting… We Can Learn From Each Other). And then the dynamic duo piloted their “Free Lesson” sign at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. How did it all spin up? As Ayo said – they got some “wicked results”. Over 25 people, including airport security and custodians, took time out from their lives and schedules to learn how to hoop it up. Four other naval officers also received a well-earned break inside the circle. Next time Ayo’s goal is to recruit a couple of pilots and maybe start a massage circle and knowing that teams on The Amazing Hoop Race got some pilots to hoop, it is definitely possible. Love! I want to introduce hooping to my community. Nobody around here knows anything about it but I don’t really have a venue.

The beauty is that you totally don’t need a venue to start with. Especially with summer here, make public spaces your own and start a hoop jam at a local park. I don’t know what part of the country you’re in, but there will probably be others excited to join you. Good luck!

Oooh … now I want to give out coupons to strangers that say “permission to dance.” Oh yes, it’s on. Thank you for the inspiration, Ayo!

Lara, you should totally do it and let us know how it goes! Or hooping.org will just find you and update us. No clue how they found me. :-)

      Good luck!

This is so cool! I live in a small, very small town in SC. I just made arrangements to have a hoop jam at our annual town festival. I’m taking a bunch of hoops and setting up beside where the bands will be playing. I’m new to hooping but enjoy it so much I just have to share. Wish me luck!
