As crowds waited for the Olympic Flame to arrive in Rochdale’s Town Centre in the UK, 300 schoolchildren gathered on The Butts for their attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for a choreographed hula hoop routine. With a previous record of 232, Gina Davies, a teacher at St Patrick’s Primary School, told Rochdale Online: “We brought 300 children down today. They’ve been practicing for about three weeks… The hoops have been out at break and lunch so they’ve all been practicing every minute they can. They absolutely love it, the hoops are staying until the end of term!” Whether they achieved the record won’t be known until adjudicators have closely studied footage of the attempt, but organizers are confident the record was broken.
Davies noted, “Everyone in our group definitely did it without dropping their hoop and looking around I reckon we’ve broken the record.”
