Amazing Hoop Race Japan

The Amazing Hoop Race, Hooping.org’s revolutionary new contest sending hula hooping teams of two on a virtual race around the world, recently landed in Tokyo, Japan. But before we tell you more about that, here’s what has happened so far for those who are just joining us. We met 14 amazing teams, the race was explained and our teams headed to Brazil for a Samba Hoop Dance Challenge. Three teams were eliminated and the rest flew to Johannesburg, South Africa where they ran into their first detour – cooking South African food or hooping with wild animals, which set the stage for a Kwaito Hoop Bliss Challenge. And yes, three more teams were eliminated and the rest were off to Paris, France, for Halloween hooping in the Catacombs beneath the city, and a Parisian Gothic Hoop Dance Challenge. Another elimination took place, sending our remaining six teams on a journey to Japan where they met our hosts and judges for this leg of the race, Ayumi Mitake of Hoop Tokyo and Tink of Spin Matsuri.

The challenge for this leg of the race was inspired by two matsuri, the Cherry Blossom Festival and Shichi-Go-San, a traditional rite of passage for children. Our teams were to embody their spirit while dressed in white and red – symbolizing good luck and long life. They were to pay a visit to a local shrine to ensure a safe and healthy future and to aid them in avoiding bad luck in these final stages of The Amazing Hoop Race. Then they were to perform their hoop dance in Tokyo with an emphasis on beauty, grace and flow – elements so well symbolized by the cherry blossom itself.

Welcome to Tokyo The scores from our judges this week will be based on 1) Hooping and Partner Integration. 2) Beauty, Grace and Flow, 3) Japan Believability, and 4) Overall Video Presentation. There were no additional challenges for our teams this week in order to allow them to focus on this task alone.

The team that comes in first this week will receive a grab bag of Tokyo hooper essentials, courtesy of our Tokyo hosts. Of the six remaining teams, only three will move on to the final leg of the race and a chance to win The Amazing Hoop Race Grand Prize Package! How did our teams do on this leg? Let’s find out!

Daisy, the song is called Kodo and it’s by a Japanese tsugaru shamisen duo called the Yoshida Brothers. You can get the album, Best of Yoshida Brothers, on iTunes or direct from their label: http://www.domomusicgroup.com/yoshidabrothers/

This is actually amazing. Geordie Greig is the editor of the London Evening Standard, the newspaper I work for. Incredible to get the support from the boss of a major UK newspaper!
