Amazing Hoop Race South Africa: Results and More

The Amazing Hoop Race, Hooping.org’s new revolutionary contest that began with fourteen teams competing in a virtual hula hoop race around the world, landed this week in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they received challenge scores from our South African host. How did Sass assign point values for our South African Kwaito Hoop Bliss challenge? The Vista Point video submissions for this week were scored for 1) Hoop Bliss, 2) South African Realism / Kwaito Inspiration, 3) Hooping and Partner Integration, and 4) Overall Video Presentation. Scores (0 to 10) were assigned for each of these four areas and there were no point deductions this week for posting after deadline or running overtime.

The Vista Points (40% of each team’s total) were then combined with our earlier Travel Point and Pit Stop Point totals (30% of each team’s total), along with the final 30% score which came directly from you, our viewing audience. Although the overwhelming popularity of The Amazing Hoop Race crashed our server unexpectedly, taking Hooping.org offline for four hours, once we were back voting was extended by four hours to help compensate. We’d like to thank everyone for your participation and for all of the patience and understanding we received during yesterday’s technical difficulties. Further steps are already being taken behind the scenes to help ensure this will not happen again.

And now, having received the scores from South Africa, we will now find out which team came in first for the second leg of The Amazing Hoop Race and which three teams have been eliminated.

Team Wisconsin In first place for our South African leg of the race and the winner of a super cool deck of Hooper Playing Cards featuring incredible hoopers on every card including Sass herself, is Team Wisconsin! Congratulations Danielle and Savannah, very nicely done!

As for our remaining 10 teams, here’s how they placed for the second leg of The Amazing Hoop Race.

2nd Place: Team Australia: Their Vista Point video was Sass’s favorite who said, “They really GOT the whole Kwaito feel!”

3rd Place: Team Georgia

4th Place: Team Bristol

5th Place: Team Texas

6th Place: Team Seattle

7th Place: Team London: Though scoring zero in one Vista Point video judging area for not having both team members present, their submission received highest marks from our judge for sharing Hoop Bliss, as well as South African Realism. Sass noted, “That rooftop looks just like downtown Jozi!”

And the final team moving through to the next leg will be:

8th Place: Team Orange County

Unfortunately that means that Team Bay Area, Team Maryland and Team North Carolina, you were the last teams to arrive. I’m sorry to inform you that you have been eliminated from the race, but please accept a most sincere thank you to each and every one of you for joining us on this new adventure that has already spanned three continents. We have truly loved having you on board for this and your presence will be missed. You’re all amazing hoopers and hoop racers in our book!

And we’d also like to extend a most heart felt dankie to Sass and everyone in South Africa for hosting all of this week. It was incredible!

Routemarker ROUTEMARKER: The second leg of the race may have just ended, but the third is starting right now. What’s in store for the eight remaining teams that are moving on? First, a quick reminder that before we leave Johannesburg for a new virtual destination with new judges and new challenges, all team scores have now been reset to zero, so once again it’s anybody’s game! Second, prepare yourselves for the dark of night as we venture forth to hoop a fright into the city of the murders in the Rue Morgue. That is your next destination.

Roadblock ROADBLOCK: Upon your arrival you will immediately encounter a Roadbloack. A Roadblock is a task that only one team member may perform and for the Roadblock we ask, “Who is ready to descend?” Based on this question alone each team must now decide which member of their team will complete the task and post their decision in the comments area below. Once a team member has been selected, (s)he cannot switch. The Roadblock task is performed only by the selected racer. When the Roadblock is completed and a travelogue has been recorded for it teams can move on. Completing the Roadblock could earn a team a maximum of 20 Travel Points.

Vista Point VISTA POINT: I am excited to let you know that you will virtually be spending Halloween somewhere very special, a placed steeped in history that was the largest city in the entire world between the 16th and 19th centuries. Your host for this leg of the race is eagerly anticipating your arrival. In fact, they’ve booked you to perform at a popular goth nightclub on Halloween night. The only problem is that the club owner wants to see a Gothic Hooping Music Video Demo for each of our teams ahead of time. Your Vista Point video challenge for this leg is to make that video – and use your new destination city as your backdrop. Each team will choose a gothic soundtrack for your video, adopt a gothic persona and dress and look and hoop the part. Not familiar with the gothic community? Then perhaps it is time for some Gothic Charm School.

Your Gothic Hoop Dance Music Video Demo will be scored on 1) Hooping and Partner Integration 2) Gothic Persona. Need some insight on persona and characterization? Check out Hooping Idol Persona Week, 3) Destination Realism: Does your video capture being there?, and 4) Overall Video Presentation. Hooping.org’s Ten Easy Hooping Video Tips are especially helpful this week when it comes to lighting, musicality, framing and more. On a sidenote, there are great make-up tutorials out there too.

Videos should be posted no later than 9pm PST on Sunday, October 30th. Your Vista Point video should be titled “Hooping.org Amazing Hoop Race Gothic Challenge” and be under five minutes in length. Be sure to email Philo using your Hooping.org member account with both links once you have posted both your Vista Point challenge video and your Roadblock travelogue video on YouTube so Pit Stop Points can be properly calculated according to the order in which you reach the Pit Stop. On your mark, get set, go!
