“There’s so many things you can do with a hoop that you wouldn’t imagine,” said Kirsten Tucker of Hoopy Thoughts in Houston, Texas, a certified hoopdance instructor who teaches at Houston Yoga and Ayurvedic Wellness Center. “The thing I like about it is it’s exercise in disguise. You don’t realize you’re exercising; you’re just having a good time. And for me, play is something I think adults don’t do enough, so this brings the playful aspect back in. The hula hoop is not a chore kind of exercise.” Yvonne Bohanon, one of Tucker’s students of two years, told the paper, “I’m amazed at what I’m able to do while I hoopdance. I’m not a natural athlete. I’m not a natural dancer. It’s amazing what you can learn over a few years.”
