Our Hoopcamp Spirit Dance Video Contest kicked off recently with the aim of sending one creative hooper to Hoopcamp, the largest annual gathering of hoopers in the world, bringing our circle together for four days of classes, workshops and events in the California redwoods. The theme this year is “The Spirit Dance: Hooping for Transcen ‘dance’” and with an all-star line up of instructors and workshops we invited you to show us how you’ve been moved by the hoop, how you move others, what hooping does for your spirit and what keeps you coming back to the dance.
Hoopers explored this fabric that connects, inspires and touches our incredibly vibrant hooping community by making and submitting videos of approximately 3 minutes or less related to the theme, with a Hoopcamp Registration camping pass as first prize. Second and third place winners would receive an official Hoopcamp T-shirt and a $50 discount on registration. Okay, you’re right, we didn’t say anything about the discount originally, but Hoopcamp Heather was inspired by you all to do even more. She said, “I loved and appreciated everyone’s expression so much. Each and every one of you is truly amazing. It has been a pleasure and an inspiration reviewing all the wonderful submissions for the Hoopcamp and Hooping.org co-sponsered Spirit Dance: Hooping for Transcen’dance video sharing. I am refraining from calling this a contest, since so much magic was translated and interpreted by so many amazing Hoopers. You all are adding to our continuing re-evolution by capturing your spirit movement with a hoop and framing it with music, in words, at beautiful locations, in your living room or dance studio and with your community. I look forward to seeing you all find and connect your spirit dance with the larger whole at Hoopcamp 2011 under the majestic Redwoods.” And while fellow judge Amy Asombrosa and I really couldn’t agree with her more, decisions were inevitably made and we proudly present the winners of our Hoopcamp Spirit Dance Video Contest.
Our first place award and our VIDEO OF THE DAY goes to Aurora Ananya of Chicago, Illinois, for this beautiful video that we felt truly captured the spirit of the contest. She writes, “Hooping has become more than just a hobby for me. It has become a part of me, a part of my personality, a part of my soul, a part of my spirit. Whenever I am having a stressful day, I hoop and everything seems to just go away. This is the basis of my video, when I begin to hoop I forget about the real world, the materialistic world and become a creature of nature. I am in a pure, blissful world of my own where all I have is me, my hoop and the beauty around me.”
Our second place award goes to Paul V, aka Paul Van Helden, along with the support of many hoopers from his local hoop community who came together for the making of this excellent submission that took a different spin on our theme. They all live in Asheville, North Carolina.
For our third place award, we couldn’t come to a decision, and rather than trying to figure out a winner we decided to declare a tie, giving both hoopers a Hoopcamp T-shirt and registration discount. Our first of the two goes to The Circular Phile, aka Low Country Hooper, for helping us transcend the self. She lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
And finally, our other third place tie award winner goes to Lizbits, aka Elizabeth Fraley, for a truly stunning entry. She lives in Los Angeles, California. Hoopcamp and Hooping.org congratulates all of our contest winners, and we have nothing but the most sincere applause for each and every one of you who entered. You’re all beautiful spirits and winners in our book and we hope to see all of you inside the circle this September at Hoopcamp. And remember, it sells out every year so register early.
Congrats!!!
