Hot Lava Fire Hooping
February 18, 2011 in Fire, Photos

Before setting out for an adventure in Hawaii, Shannon Bishop of Shapeshifter Hoops told friends she wanted to fire hoop with hot lava while she was there, but she hardly thought she would be able to – nor did she imagine what it would be involved in the long, intense hike over unstable lava fields late at night. While she didn’t get burned by the lava, she did get burned by her fire hoop for the first time because it was so windy. Shannon told Hooping.org, “But what the locals will tell you is that it was Pele, the goddess of the volcano and protector of the islands, letting me know whose boss! And honestly it really felt that way. They will also say that it was an initiation rite of sorts and that she would have blessed me with special gifts as well. That place was very surreal and the lava had such an intense energy it got me thinking there could be some truth to this Pele spirit and so I bear my burn scar proudly.” Here she strikes the “goddess pose” in honor of volcano goddess Pele, on the Big Island of Hawaii, surrounded by hot lava. She lives in Washington, DC, USA. From this photo set by Leigh Hilbert Photography.

This is so hot! How fortunate that Shannon could meet Pele in this way. I’ve been where the lava is undulating near my toes. So happy Shannon’s photo shows this power.

I’ve done that hike before many times, I wouldn’t want to do it while hauling a hoop and fuel, so props to you girl! And the ground is so uneven, I don’t know how you were hooping out there.
