I was just a stay-at-home mother with two kids who decided to give the hula hoop a try. At first I could only keep it up for two seconds. But it was fun and I kept wanting to see how long I could do it.” Then she happened to get on a scale one day and discovered she had lost 10 pounds — just like that. “I couldn’t believe it,” MacDonald said. “It just took off from there. What I liked about it, especially in the beginning, is that I didn’t feel like I had to set aside an hour or an hour-and-a-half to go for a run or go to the gym. I could just pick it up. Sometimes it would be five times a day for five minutes, some days it would be for just 10 minutes.
