With all of the discussion going on surrounding the 2008 Hoopie Awards (vote now), we received a request to see a change made next year. As a result, Hooping.org will be adding a new category to the Hoopies roster in 2009 for Outstanding Online Video Tutorial. Lily in Honolulu, Hawaii, told Hooping.org, “The people who make and share teaching tutorials have been especially helpful to me. I don’t know any hoopers in the real world.” We were inclined to agree and given that a distinction is already reflected on Hooping.org between our “Video of the Day” and our “Trick of the Week” you can be on the look out for a new award category next year honoring those who take time out to share with others just how it’s done. For those of you with video cameras, what tutorials can you share in the year ahead? Remember, it doesn’t have to be something new either. There’s always new people picking up a hoop and we all learn differently from different instructors. Your voice might be the one that makes someone finally get that move for the very first time.

So true. Online video tutorials were instumental in the begining of my hoop practice. I was the first hooper in my community, and Safire’s online tutorials taught me so much and got me hooked. I have since then met a couple hoopers (including Safire) but without online tutorials I might not of gotten into such a beautiful artform. I now teach hooping here in Thunder Bay and I use techniques and terminology learned from online tutorials.
